What types of goods are suitable for transportation by cargo bike?

Many people underestimate what you can transport with a cargo bike. From weekly groceries to small furniture, from children to business deliveries - the possibilities are surprisingly wide. But what makes a cargo bike so suitable for goods transport? And where are the limits? Joeri, logistics specialist and cargo bike expert, shares his experience with the practical applications of modern cargo bikes and explains why more and more people and companies are choosing this versatile transport solution.

A bakfiets is a versatile means of transportation suitable for various types of goods. "I am always amazed at what people transport," says Joeri. In fact, its ample payload and stable construction allow you to transport daily groceries as well as larger items. In addition, cargo bikes are ideal for food, small furniture and even business applications.

What makes cargo bikes so suitable for freight transport?

“The cargo bike is distinguished by its unique loading area at the front," Joeri explains. This gives you a direct view of your cargo during transport, which gives a lot of confidence.

The carrying capacity is also impressive. Depending on the model, you transport between 80 and 150 kg of goods, says Joeri. Moreover, the low position of the center of gravity provides extra stability for heavier loads.

In addition, an important technical advance is the belt drive. Indeed, this offers several advantages, lists Joeri: less maintenance, longer life, no lubrication required and quiet operation. Therefore, it is ideal for intensive use.

Furthermore, the electrical support transportation even more accessible. So you don't have to be an elite athlete to carry groceries around town without any problems, notes Joeri.

Transporting daily groceries

"A cargo bike is ideally suited for weekly shopping for an entire family," states Joeri. In fact, the spacious cargo box can accommodate several bags, crates of drinks and bulkier products.

"For weekly groceries, you can easily fit 4-6 well-filled bags," Joeri calculates. "Plus larger items like packs of diapers or laundry detergent."

Joeri gives practical tips for optimal packing:

  • Place heavy items at the bottom for a low center of gravity
  • Use crates to organize smaller products
  • Protect fragile products by placing them on top
  • Distribute the weight evenly across the tray

"Frozen foods are also good to transport with a cooler bag," tips Joeri. "The travel time is often short enough not to break the cold chain."

"Finally a fatbike you can ride without having your knees next to your ears."
"The bike is perfect for people with long legs. Sitting comfort is perfect for long distances."
"We have been riding a Stoer bicycle for a year now without any problems. Even the battery capacity has not deteriorated. And when you then see other brands where after a year the rust marks are visible I am glad I spent a little more and now have a bike made entirely of aluminum. And this one stays really neat!!!"
"Purchased a STOER Bike last year after trying several fatbikes. STOER is by far the best! Still very much enjoy my purchase. In addition, the service is top notch!"

Combining children and goods

"A cargo bike is ideally suited for combining child transport and goods transport," Joeri emphasizes. In fact, with the right model, you can easily transport both children and groceries.

"Most family models are designed with this dual function in mind," explains Joeri. "They offer seating for two or three children plus enough room for groceries."

For safe combining, Joeri offers important tips:

  • Ensure that loose objects cannot move into the children's area
  • Use nets to safely store smaller items
  • Place heavy objects low and away from children
  • Never exceed the maximum weight

"By placing children in the front and luggage behind, you create a safe distribution," Joeri advises.

Furniture and large objects

"With a bakfiets transport your amazingly bulky items," Joeri explains enthusiastically. Indeed, the robust construction and spacious loading surface make a lot possible.

In terms of furniture, these are common items: small tables, chairs (stacked), small cabinets, nightstands and lamps. "Household appliances such as vacuum cleaners and microwaves also go without a problem," Joeri adds.

"For plants and garden supplies, a cargo bike is also ideal," he notes. "Larger potted plants, bags of potting soil and garden tools fit perfectly."

For safe transportation, Joeri advises:

  • Securing the load properly with tension straps
  • Protect fragile items with blankets
  • Distribute the weight evenly
  • Planning the route in advance

"With a payload between 80-150 kg, you transport considerably more than you expect," states Joeri.

Business applications

“A cargo bike is an effective business transportation solution for urban entrepreneurs," Joeri stressed. For its versatility and maneuverability make this means of transportation ideal for various business applications.

For example, a cargo bike offers significant advantages for delivery services, Joeri explains. Namely, you bypass traffic jams, have no parking problems and, what's more, you get right to the front door. Therefore, it is perfect for meals, flowers, packages and even groceries.

In addition, cargo bikes are also great for mobile services, Joeri says. Think, for example, of coffee sales, ice cream shops or mobile repair services. In that case, the cargo bike serves not only as a means of transportation, but also as a sales platform.

Especially for business use, Joeri recommends electric models. This is because belt drive minimizes downtime and also ensures that employees do not arrive sweaty, he explains.

With branding, you also create a mobile billboard, tips Joeri. That way, you get effective local visibility without incurring additional marketing costs.

Restrictions in goods transport

"Although cargo bikes are versatile, they have practical limitations," warns Joeri. It's important to know these to avoid disappointment.

"The weight limit is the most obvious restriction," explains Joeri. "Most cargo bikes have a maximum between 80-150 kg. Ample for everyday use, but insufficient for very heavy items."

There is also a limit in dimensions. "Too long objects, very wide items or high stacks that obstruct the view do not fit," Joeri lists.

"Weather conditions also play a role," he notes. "In heavy rain or strong winds, transportation becomes more challenging, especially for fragile items."

"Finally, a fully loaded cargo bike requires some experience," advises Joeri. "The handling changes significantly with heavy cargo."

Best cargo bike for heavy transport

"For heavy transport, an electric cargo bike with a robust frame is the best choice," advises Joeri. These models are specifically designed for larger loads without compromising on comfort.

"Tricycles offer the most stability with heavy loads," explains Joeri. "They don't tip over when stationary and require less sense of balance. Ideal for business use."

Electric support is virtually indispensable. "A powerful motor makes sure you get away effortlessly and take slopes," says Joeri.

When choosing, consider: motor power (at least 250W), battery capacity, torque, frame strength and braking power. "Hydraulic disc brakes are indispensable for reliable braking power," Joeri emphasizes.

"Bucket bikes with belt drive have an advantage in heavy transport," tips Joeri. "The belt handles varying loads better and requires less maintenance."

Conclusions on goods transportation

"Bakfietsen are surprisingly versatile means of transportation," concludes Joeri. Because with a carrying capacity of up to 150 kg, they transport much more than people expect.

Moreover, the combination of cargo space, maneuverability and accessibility makes cargo bikes ideal for urban areas. In many situations, they are even faster than cars for shorter distances, notes Joeri.

For business owners, cargo bikes additionally offer a sustainable and cost-effective solution, he argues. Lower operating costs make it financially attractive, with an additional positive effect on your corporate image.

At STOER Bikes they see a clear trend. Indeed, more and more people and companies are switching to our electric cargo bikes with belt drive, says Joeri. This is mainly because of the reliability and ease of use.

Whether you run family errands, run a delivery service or regularly transport large items - a modern cargo bike offers a practical and sustainable solution in any case, Joeri concludes. So it's an investment in convenience, efficiency and a greener living environment.
