Subsidies for electric bicycles and cargo bikes vary considerably between EU countries. These differences are important if you are an entrepreneur considering investing in sustainable mobility solutions.
"In the Netherlands, the opportunities for the UrbanX and CargoX really excellent," Thomas explains. "Much better than in other European countries."
In the Netherlands, entrepreneurs can take advantage of MIA (Environmental Investment Allowance) and VAMIL (Random Depreciation of Environmental Investments) schemes. These offer up to 45% deduction of the investment amount and accelerated depreciation. For electric cargo bikes, this can save thousands of euros.
A specific subsidy scheme for business electric cargo bikes has existed in Germany since 2023. Companies can receive up to 2,500 euros in subsidies per cargo bike purchased through the "Lastenfahrrad" program.
Belgium has fragmented policies by region. Flanders offers premiums of up to 1,500 euros for electric cargo bikes. Brussels has an entrepreneurial subsidy that covers up to 50% of the purchase price, a maximum of 3,000 euros.
France has extended the "Bonus Vélo" program to businesses, with subsidies of up to 2,000 euros. Many French cities offer additional local subsidies, bringing the total benefit up to 40% of the purchase price.
Many national subsidies can be supplemented by local schemes of municipalities and provinces. Dutch cities such as Amsterdam and Utrecht have additional programs for electric cargo bikes.
