The weight of an electric city bike is determined by several components. Together, these make up the total mass. The four most important components are the frame, motor, battery and accessories.
The frame material is the basis of the weight. Aluminum frames are currently the most common. They offer a good balance of strength, weight and price. Higher-value materials such as carbon are lighter. But these are considerably more expensive. A steel frame, on the other hand, is heavier but often more economical.
The electric drive adds significant weight. "The difference between a good and bad bike is not only in the power," Laurens says. "Weight also plays a big role in how the bike feels." An average center motor weighs between 3 and 4 kg. Front-wheel and rear-wheel hub motors tend to be slightly lighter. More powerful motors with more torque tend to be heavier.
The battery is often the heaviest electrical component of an e-bike. A standard 400-500Wh battery weighs about 2.5 to 3 kg. Larger capacity batteries (600-750Wh) can weigh 3.5 to 4.5 kg.
Finally, practical accessories also contribute to the overall weight. Fenders, luggage racks, lights and a lock, for example. Possibly a suspension fork or seat post. Together, these extras can add 2 to 4 kg.

- Frame (aluminum): 3-5 kg
- Battery (500Wh): 2.5-3 kg
- Motor: 3-4 kg
- Wheels and tires: 4-5 kg
- Accessories: 2-4 kg
- Other components: 5-7 kg
