7 tips when ordering an electric fatbike

What makes an electric fatbike so special?

The popularity of electric fatbikes is rising rapidly in the Netherlands, and for good reason. With their distinctive thick tires and electric assistance, these rugged two-wheelers offer a unique combination of comfort, stability and versatility. They allow you to ride effortlessly through sand, snow or mud, while also whizzing effortlessly along paved roads.

The difference from regular bikes is not only in the distinctive tires, but also in the overall riding experience. The electric assistance allows you to cover longer distances without getting exhausted, while the wide tires provide extra stability and grip on challenging surfaces. More and more adults are discovering that an electric fatbike offers the perfect balance of sportiness and ease of use.

Purchasing an electric fatbike involves several considerations. To help you make this choice, we have gathered some practical advice to help you find the ideal electric fatbike for your needs.

1: Pay attention to battery capacity and range

The battery is the beating heart of your electric fatbike and largely determines how far you can get on one charge. Capacity is expressed in watt-hours (Wh) - the higher this number, the greater your range. For daily commuting, a battery of 400-500Wh is often sufficient, but for long tours or hilly terrain, it's better to opt for 600Wh or more.

The actual range depends on several factors. Your body weight, the surface you ride on, temperature, outdoor air pressure and level of support all have an influence. Keep in mind that manufacturers often state the optimal range, which in practice 20-30% may be lower with heavy use.

Ask yourself: what is your longest expected ride? To be sure, add 20% to that to determine which battery capacity is ideal for you. If you regularly get out of reach of a charging point, consider a model where you can carry a spare battery or one with fast-charge option.

2: Choose the right frame size and type

The frame of your electric fatbike determines your riding comfort and safety. A frame that is too small creates an uncomfortable posture and possible knee problems, while a frame that is too large makes mounting and maneuvering difficult. Most manufacturers offer a size chart where you can determine the correct frame size based on your height.

Several frame types are available. The traditional diamond frame offers maximum strength but requires you to lift your leg high when getting on. A step-through (or low-entry) frame makes getting on and off easier, which is especially useful in town where you have to stop frequently. For longer rides or off-road use, a diamond frame usually offers more stability.

If possible, test different frames before making a decision. Pay attention to your sitting position: you should be able to reach your handlebars easily without overstretching your back, and when you sit on the saddle, your feet should be able to touch the ground comfortably when standing still.

3: Compare the different drive systems

The heart of any electric fatbike is the drive system, consisting of the motor and controller. There are two main types of motors: hub motors (in the wheel) and middle motors (at the bottom bracket). Hub motors are usually cheaper and provide a boost, while middle motors provide a more natural riding feel by responding directly to your pedaling effort.

The power of a motor is expressed in newton-meters (Nm) - this is the torque that indicates how much force the motor can deliver. For flat terrain, 50-60Nm is sufficient, but for hilly terrain or if you're hauling heavier loads, opt for 80Nm or more. Support levels are also important: more levels means more control over your riding experience and battery consumption.

  • Hub motor: Simple, cheaper, less maintenance, but less powerful on hills
  • Center motor: More natural ride feel, better weight distribution, more powerful on inclines, but more expensive

For everyday use in the city, a hub motor is often fine, but if you regularly ride off-road or in hilly areas, a center motor is the better choice.

4: Check tire quality and width

The tires are what make a fatbike a fatbike! The width usually varies between 10 and 12 cm (4 to 5 inches) and greatly affects your riding experience. Wider tires offer more grip and comfort on rough surfaces, while slightly narrower tires have less rolling resistance on paved roads.

Quality is just as important as width. Look for tires with good puncture protection and a tread that suits your most common surface. For versatile use, all-terrain tires are ideal, but if you mainly ride on one type of surface, you can choose more specific: deeper tread for mud and sand, less tread for asphalt.

The tire pressure on fatbikes is much lower than on normal bikes, usually between 0.5 and 1.5 bar. Lower pressure gives you more grip and comfort on soft surfaces, while higher pressure is better for paved roads. Invest in a good pressure gauge so you can always keep your tires at the optimal pressure.

5: Consider brakes and safety features.

Good brakes are crucial on electric fatbikes, which can reach speeds of up to 25 mph and are heavier than regular bikes. Hydraulic disc brakes offer the best braking power and control in all weather conditions, but are more expensive than mechanical disc brakes. The latter are more economical and easier to maintain, but require more hand power and regular adjustment.

In addition to brakes, there are other safety features that make your life more enjoyable. Powerful, integrated lighting ensures that you are visible and can see yourself well in the dark. A clear display that shows your speed, battery status and support level helps you ride safely without distractions.

Ask yourself how and where you usually ride. Do you often ride in the dark or in bad weather? Then good lighting and hydraulic brakes are not a luxury. An alarm system or GPS tracker can also be useful if you often have to park your fatbike outside.

6: Review warranty terms and after-sales service

An electric fatbike is a hefty investment, so good warranty terms are key. Pay particular attention to how long the warranty applies to the frame (ideally at least 5 years), the electrical components (at least 2 years) and specifically the battery (often 2 years or a certain number of charge cycles).

Equally important is after-sales service. Can you turn to a local dealer for maintenance and repairs? Are spare parts readily available? Some fatbikes use brand-specific parts that are difficult to replace, which can eventually lead to higher costs and longer wait times.

Read online reviews about the manufacturer's customer service and, when in doubt, seek advice from current owners. A slightly more expensive fatbike with excellent service can be more economical in the long run than a cheaper model where you are left to your own devices when problems arise.

7: Don't forget essential accessories

The right accessories will make your electric fatbike even more versatile and practical. A sturdy lock is no luxury given the value of these bikes. Mudguards keep you dry in wet weather, while a rack or panniers help you carry groceries or other items.

Specific to fatbikes, there are accessories that can enhance your riding experience. Consider a tire pressure gauge for the low pressure of fatbikes, sturdy side stands that can handle the higher weight, or special winter gloves for cold weather riding.

  • Essential basic accessories: solid lock, fenders, lights, side stand
  • Comfort-enhancing accessories: ergonomic grips, suspension seat post, smartphone holder
  • Practical extras: rack, panniers, water bottle holder

Some accessories are better arranged right at the time of purchase, such as fenders specific to your model. Others you can add gradually as your needs grow.
