Can you ride an electric fatbike on the bike path?

Yes, you may use a electric fatbike riding on the bike path in the Netherlands, provided it meets the legal requirements for a "normal" electric bicycle (pedelec). This means that the electric support only works while pedaling, does not go faster than 25 km/h, and has a maximum power of 250 watts. The width of the tires makes no difference to the law - what matters are the technical specifications of the electric motor and the maximum speed. If you meet these requirements, then you are considered a normal cyclist and may use all bike paths.

What are the rules for electric fatbikes on the bike path?

In the Netherlands, electric fatbikes are treated according to the same rules as other electric bicycles. The legislation here distinguishes between two main categories: the regular e-bike (pedelec) and the speed pedelec.

An electric fatbike that falls under the pedelec category is legally considered a normal bicycle. It has the following features: pedal assistance up to a maximum of 25 km/h, electric motor with maximum power of 250 watts, support only works when you pedal yourself.

"Our UrbanX meets these requirements perfectly," Thomas says. "With 250W motor you get everywhere that regular bikes are also allowed." With such an electric fatbike, you can simply ride on all bike paths. You don't need a helmet, driver's license, license plate or insurance.

A speed pedelec, on the other hand, supports up to 45 km/h and is considered a moped. With this, you are not allowed to ride on regular bike paths, but must use the carriageway or moped path. You also need a moped license plate, driver's license AM and a special helmet. Most electric fatbikes you encounter in the Netherlands fall into the pedelec category.

What are the technical requirements for a legal electric fatbike?

To be legally considered a bicycle and thus allowed to ride on the bike path, an electric fatbike must meet specific technical requirements. These are established by law and strictly enforced.

The main technical requirements are: a maximum continuous power of 250 watts for the electric motor, electric support works only when actively pedaling (no "throttle"), support drops off gradually and stops completely at 25 mph.

"All STOER Bikes models are designed this way," Thomas emphasizes. "CityX and CargoX have no throttle and stop support at 25 mph." The bicycle must have working brakes, lights and reflectors. A functioning bell is also mandatory.

Please note that some electric fatbikes on the market have a power rating higher than 250 watts or provide support above 25 mph. These do not meet the legal requirements for use on the bike path.

A fatbike that has been technically modified to go faster than the speed limit is legally considered a moped or motorcycle. This means you can no longer ride it on the bike path.

Are there different rules for fatbikes with belt drives?

No, for fatbikes with a belt drive exactly the same legal rules apply as for chain drive models. The drive technology does not affect the legal classification of the bicycle. What matters are the technical specifications around power and speed.

Fatbikes with belt drive do offer some practical advantages: quieter to use than chain drive, less maintenance required, longer life than traditional chains, cleaner to use.

"Our belt drive is legally just a bicycle," Thomas explains. "But practically much more convenient because of the minimal maintenance."

These advantages make belt drive an excellent choice for everyday urban use, where reliability and ease of maintenance are important. However, the technology falls within the same legal frameworks as traditional drive systems.

So for the law, it doesn't matter whether you have a belt-driven or chain-driven electric fatbike - as long as the assistance does not exceed 25 km/h and the power does not exceed 250 watts.

Where are you allowed to ride an electric fatbike in Dutch cities?

With an electric fatbike that meets the legal requirements for a regular e-bike, you are allowed to ride in the same places in Dutch cities as with a regular bike. This gives you a lot of flexibility in traffic.

Places where you may ride your electric fatbike: all regular bicycle paths (marked with round blue sign), bicycle streets where cars are guests, residential areas (at walking pace), the carriageway within built-up areas if there is no bicycle path, pedestrian areas where cycling is allowed.

"With our CargoX, you can get anywhere in the city," Thomas explains. "No restrictions by environmental zones or access bans."

In some cities, there are specific zones where motorized traffic is restricted. Electric fatbikes that fall under the bicycle category are not affected by this.

However, it is important to adjust your speed to the environment. In busy pedestrian areas or when sharing the bike path, it is wise to moderate your speed. This contributes to a positive image around electric fatbikes.

"Purchased a STOER Bike last year after trying several fatbikes. STOER is by far the best! Still very much enjoy my purchase. In addition, the service is top notch!"
"We have been riding a Stoer bicycle for a year now without any problems. Even the battery capacity has not deteriorated. And when you then see other brands where after a year the rust marks are visible I am glad I spent a little more and now have a bike made entirely of aluminum. And this one stays really neat!!!"
"The bike is perfect for people with long legs. Sitting comfort is perfect for long distances."

What are the advantages of an electric fatbike for commuting?

Electric fatbikes offer several advantages that make them perfect for daily commuting in the Netherlands. These advantages mean that more and more commuters are choosing this sustainable transportation option.

The main advantages are: comfort on different surfaces due to wide tires that absorb shocks, stable in all weather conditions with more grip in rain or slippery conditions, greater range with electric assistance without arriving sweaty, less congestion problem by bypassing traffic congestion.

"Customers regularly tell us how the UrbanX has improved their daily commute," says Thomas. "More comfortable and reliable than regular bikes."

There are also lower costs: no fuel costs, parking fees or expensive insurance. Reliability especially of belt drive models that require little maintenance. The combination of comfort, reliability and accessibility makes electric fatbikes particularly suitable for everyday use.

Electric fatbikes also offer health benefits. Although you have electric assistance, you are still actively moving. For business owners who need to be in town a lot, an electric fatbike offers practical advantages: you can get almost anywhere, have no parking problems.

At STOER Bikes, we combine the best of both worlds: the convenience of motorized transportation with the flexibility and health benefits of bicycles.
