How can a cargo bike reduce my operating costs?

More and more business owners are discovering that a cargo bike can significantly reduce their operating costs. From fuel savings to tax advantages - the electric cargo bike is proving to be a smart business investment. But what makes them so cost-effective? And how do you best tackle the switch? Joeri, entrepreneur and cargo bike expert, shares his practical insights.

A cargo bike A cargo bike can significantly reduce your operating costs by saving in multiple areas. "I regularly see business owners amazed at the savings," says Joeri. First of all, you save directly on fuel costs, insurance and parking fees. Moreover, electric cargo bikes have lower running costs of about €0.15 per 100 km compared to cars that cost €10-15 per 100 km. In addition, business owners benefit from tax advantages and increased efficiency in urban areas.

How can a cargo bike reduce my operating costs?

Why cargo bikes are a smart investment

"The numbers speak for themselves," states Joeri. For example, a quality electric cargo bike costs between €3,000 and €6,000, but offers substantial savings in the long run. Moreover, with the rising cost of traditional business transportation, alternatives are becoming increasingly attractive.

The beauty of a electric cargo bike is precisely its versatility, Joeri explains. For example, you can use them to transport materials, products or tools, and the electric support makes it effortless to navigate around town. Therefore, they are ideal for different sectors, such as hospitality, retail and artisans.

Furthermore, a cargo bike contributes to a positive corporate image. After all, customers are increasingly choosing companies that make environmentally conscious choices, notes Joeri.

How does a cargo bike reduce daily transportation costs?

"The savings are immediately noticeable on your monthly balance sheet," says Joeri. This is because a cargo bike eliminates several expense items that are standard with traditional commercial vehicles.

"Look at the fuel costs alone," Joeri calculates. "€0.15 in electricity per 100 kilometers versus €10-15 for a van. With daily use, you're talking hundreds of euros in savings per month."

Furthermore, these costs fall away: motor vehicle taxes (€125-250 per quarter), insurance, parking fees that can save €300-500 per month in cities, and environmental zone charges.

"Don't forget the hidden costs, too," warns Joeri. "Lost time due to traffic jams and parking searches - that will save you 50-60 hours annually in traffic jams and 40 hours searching for parking spots."

Maintenance advantages of belt drive

"There really is a big difference here," Joeri stresses. "A cargo bike with belt drive has significant maintenance benefits that directly result in lower operating costs."

The crucial difference is in the replacement of the traditional chain with a durable carbon belt. "No chain lubrication required, no rusting, and the life span is 3-4 times longer," lists Joeri.

"In a practical sense, you reduce your annual maintenance costs with 30-40%," he explains. "But for business users, reliability is perhaps most important. Downtime is costly - every time a vehicle has to be brought in, you lose productive hours."

"Finally a fatbike you can ride without having your knees next to your ears."
"The bike is perfect for people with long legs. Sitting comfort is perfect for long distances."
"We have been riding a Stoer bicycle for a year now without any problems. Even the battery capacity has not deteriorated. And when you then see other brands where after a year the rust marks are visible I am glad I spent a little more and now have a bike made entirely of aluminum. And this one stays really neat!!!"
"Purchased a STOER Bike last year after trying several fatbikes. STOER is by far the best! Still very much enjoy my purchase. In addition, the service is top notch!"

Tax breaks for businesses

"The tax benefits are really substantial," Joeri enthuses. For companies that choose cargo bikes, there are various tax benefits available that significantly reduce the purchase cost.

"The small business investment deduction is a game-changer," explains Joeri. "Up to 28% of the investment cost can be deducted from your profit tax." Additionally, you can benefit from Environmental Investment Allowance (MIA) up to an additional 36%, VAMIL scheme for 75% depreciation, and full VAT deduction.

"Several municipalities offer additional subsidies," Joeri tips. "Amsterdam, for example, gives up to €2,000 for electric cargo bikes."

It is important for ZZP'ers to know that a cargo bike is not subject to additional taxable benefit rules. "No additional taxable benefit for private use - that saves again," notes Joeri.

Improve efficiency of urban distribution

"In busy city centers, you are often faster than motorized traffic," states Joeri. A cargo bike eliminates logistical obstacles that impede traditional vehicles.

The accessibility benefits are clear: unlimited access to pedestrian areas, no parking searches, use of bike lanes and crosswalks. "You stop right in front of your customer's door," explains Joeri.

"During rush hours, a cargo bike often proves faster," he says. "Where vans get stuck in traffic, you drive smoothly. This means more deliveries per hour."

For service companies, this means saving time. "Your equipment is always with you, you drive past traffic jams, and parking is no longer a problem," Joeri lists.

ROI on van replacement

"The Return on Investment is remarkably positive," Joeri says firmly. "An average 12-18 month payback period - that's impressive."

A high-quality electric cargo bike may cost €3,000-€6,000, but after tax breaks, this often drops by 20-40%. "The monthly savings are substantial," Joeri calculates: "€200-350 on fuel, in addition €50-100 insurance, in addition €40-80 road tax, and also €100-300 parking fees."

"In total, a typical urban business owner saves €500-800 per month," Joeri concludes. "For businesses with leased cars, the savings are even greater - lease rates start at €400-500 per month, excluding fuel."

The future of business transportation

"The future is moving decidedly toward sustainable solutions," predicts Joeri. This shift is driven by cost savings, changing regulations and consumer expectations.

"With emission-free zones in inner cities, you position your business for the future," Joeri explains. "Amsterdam, Utrecht and Rotterdam, for example, are gradually making their city centers car-free. With a electric cargo bike therefore you are prepared for this."

At STOER Bikes they also see increasing demand from forward-thinking entrepreneurs. "These entrepreneurs not only realize cost savings, but also strengthen their position as sustainable players," notes Joeri.

"When you consider revamping your business mobility, you join a growing community of savvy entrepreneurs," concludes Joeri. "Cost savings is not just about what you spend today, but how you position your business for tomorrow."
