The fundamental difference between a belt-driven cargo bike and a chain-driven cargo bike is in the drive system that transmits pedaling power to the wheel. A belt drive consists of a strong, flexible carbon fiber belt with teeth that engage special sprockets, while a chain drive uses a metal chain running around chainrings.
Materials are an important differentiator. Belt drives, such as the widely used Gates CDX system, are made of durable carbon reinforced with polyurethane. Chains, on the other hand, consist of metal links that require regular lubrication. This difference in material directly affects maintenance and durability.
The construction also differs significantly. A belt has no links that can wear or damage, but is one piece of flexible material. A chain consists of dozens of individual links, pins and rollers, all of which can show wear and require maintenance.
