What battery types are there for fatbikes?

Most fatbikes today run on lithium-ion batteries. This is because this type of battery offers the best balance between capacity, weight and longevity. Lithium-ion cells are light, charge quickly and do not suffer from the memory effect. This makes them ideal for daily business use.

There are also lithium-polymer batteries on the market. These are even more compact and lighter than lithium-ion. Still, they are less commonly used for fatbikes. What determines the lifespan of a fatbike battery?

On average, a fatbike battery lasts 3-5 years with daily business use. The exact lifespan depends on several factors. The number of charging cycles is the most important. A quality battery can handle 800-1000 full charge cycles before the capacity decreases noticeably.

What is a charging cycle? One cycle is equivalent to fully charging from 0% to 100%. Are you charging from 50% to 100%? Then that counts as half a cycle. So with daily use and regular charging, you can ride trouble-free for years.

Temperature plays a big role

Temperature greatly affects the life of your battery. Extreme cold (below 0°C) or heat (above 35°C) accelerates cell aging. Therefore, always store your battery at room temperature, preferably between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius.

In winter, it is best to take the battery indoors. Don't leave it in a cold shed or garage. This extends its life and ensures better performance. In summer, park your fatbike out of full sun to avoid overheating.

The right charging behavior

How you charge also makes a lot of difference to battery life. Don't always charge your battery completely full if you don't have to. A charge level between 20% and 80% is optimal for cell health. Thus, you can extend the life with 30-50%.

Also, never allow the battery to discharge completely. Deep discharge (below 10%) can cause permanent damage. So start charging as soon as you get below 20%. Modern batteries do have built-in protection, but prevention is better than cure.

The ANWB advises to charge your battery regularly, even if you don't use the bike for a while. Are you storing the bike for a longer period of time? Then charge the battery to 50-60% and recharge monthly. This will keep it in top condition.

  • Do you have multiple bikes? Then make a charging schedule so that all bikes are ready on time
  • Consider an extra charger in the office - that way you can recharge between uses
  • Charge at room temperature (10-20°C) for best performance
  • Always use the original charger or a manufacturer-approved alternative

When should you replace the battery?

A fatbike battery needs replacement when its capacity drops below the 70% of the original. You notice this because the range decreases significantly. A battery that used to reach 100 km but now only lasts 60-70 km is nearing the end of its life.

Other signals for replacement are:

  • The charging time has increased tremendously (more than 10-12 hours)
  • Battery gets very hot while driving or charging
