The cargo box construction plays a crucial role. Cargo bikes with strong aluminum or steel construction offer the highest carrying capacity. Typical dimensions are 100 cm long and 70 cm wide. This provides space for various materials.

The motor type also determines the load capacity. More powerful motors (250W to 750W) support heavier loads without overloading. Motor placement affects weight distribution and stability.

Battery capacity is also important. Heavier loads consume more energy. For regular heavy transportation, we recommend at least 500Wh capacity.

Modern electric cargo bikes have special reinforcements. Advanced braking systems handle higher load weights safely. Professional models even have adjustable suspension for load weight.

For entrepreneurs, the total system weight is important. This includes driver and is between 180 and 250 kg. Don't just look at bucket payload.

What are the tax advantages of a business electric cargo bike?

As a business owner, you benefit from several tax advantages. These make the investment more attractive and shorten the payback period.

"Many business owners don't know how much they can save," says Joeri. "With the right tax schemes, you can sometimes get 40% of the purchase price back."

Small business investment allowance (KIA): With this, you deduct a percentage of the investment amount from your profit. This results in lower tax costs. The percentage can be as much as 28% of the investment.

Environmental Investment Allowance (MIA): Specifically for environmentally friendly business investments such as electric cargo bikes. You may deduct up to 36% of the investment amount extra. This is in addition to the regular depreciation.

Random depreciation of environmental investments (Vamil): This allows you to write off 75% of the investment at a time of your choosing. This gives flexibility in spreading tax benefits. Liquidity benefits are possible.

For self-employed and sole proprietors, the entrepreneur deduction applies. This is possible if the cargo bike is used primarily (>90%) for business purposes. Also, VAT on purchase and maintenance is fully deductible.

Ongoing costs such as maintenance, insurance and repairs are operating expenses. This further reduces your taxable profit. This combination makes the electric cargo bike financially attractive.

Various subsidies are available to businesses in the Netherlands. The schemes vary by municipality and region. They can cover a significant portion of the purchase cost.

"The subsidies really make a difference," says Joeri. "Amsterdam gives up to €2,000, Rotterdam even up to €2,500. That makes a huge difference in costs."

Dutch cities:

  • Amsterdam: up to €2,000 per vehicle for electric commercial vehicles
  • Rotterdam: similar scheme with subsidies up to €2,500
  • Utrecht and The Hague: similar incentive schemes
  • Nationwide: SEBA scheme for larger electric cargo bikes

Belgium by region:

  • Flanders: up to €1,500 through local mobility grants
  • Brussels Capital Region: grants of up to €4,000 for green mobility

Germany:

  • Cities such as Berlin, Munich, Hamburg: subsidy programs for cargo bikes
  • Federal level: "Lastenfahrrad-Förderprogramm" up to 25% of acquisition costs (max €2,500)

France:

  • "Bonus Vélo" program: up to €2,000 subsidy for entrepreneurs
  • Paris: additional grant schemes

When applying, pay attention to specific conditions. Consider mandatory hours of use, reporting requirements and restrictions. Application procedures are usually digital. You must be able to demonstrate business use.

How do corporate electric cargo bike leasing options work?

For companies that do not want to invest directly, leasing constructions offer flexibility on the one hand and attractive alternatives on the other. There are different lease variants thus with specific advantages and also tax implications.

"Leasing is popular with our business customers," says Joeri, "because financial leasing in particular works well, and what's more, it offers ownership."

"Maintenance is much less than people think," says Joeri. "Especially with belt drive. No lubrication, no dirty hands, and lasts much longer than chains."

Maintenance costs: On average between €100 and €200 per year with normal business use. This is significantly lower than conventional commercial vehicles.

Belt drive advantages:

  • No lubrication required, so cleaner use
  • Longer life (30,000 km versus 3,000-5,000 km for chains)
  • Quieter and smoother ride
  • Less susceptible to dirt, sand and weather
  • Lower overall maintenance costs

Maintenance schedule: Maintenance check at least twice a year. With heavy use, quarterly check. Key points:

  • Checking tire pressure and wear
  • Brake inspection and adjustment
  • Checking electrical connections
  • Assess general condition of frame and paint

Battery care: With proper care, a lithium-ion battery will last 3-5 years. Avoid full discharge and extreme temperatures. Do not store for long periods of time without use.

Brakes: Deserve extra attention due to higher weight and load. Check brake pads and discs regularly. Have them replaced in a timely manner for safety.

Tires: Choose high-quality, puncture-resistant tires for higher loads. More expensive to purchase but lower overall cost due to less downtime.
