The advantages of aluminum

Lightweight but strong: An aluminum bicycle frame is lighter than steel, but strong enough to handle heavy loads. The UrbanX has a maximum load of 180 kg including rider and passenger. The CargoX cargo bike carries even 150 kg of load plus the rider.

Stainless: Aluminum does not corrode like steel. Your bike can be outside in rain, snow and salt without affecting the frame. This is ideal for business bikes that are often stored outside.

Rigid and responsive: The rigidity of aluminum provides direct power transmission. When you pedal, all the energy goes to the wheels. This makes cycling efficient and the bike feels responsive.

The right alloy makes all the difference

Aluminum versus steel

Steel used to be the standard for bicycle frames and still has fans. The material is cheap, easy to repair and offers a comfortable ride due to its natural flexibility. But steel is heavier than aluminum and prone to rust.

For business bikes that are outdoors daily and used intensively, aluminum is the better choice. Its lower weight makes cycling less tiring, and its rust resistance means less maintenance.

Aluminum versus carbon

Carbon frames are lighter and offer better vibration damping. But carbon is considerably more expensive and more vulnerable on impact. A hard blow can damage a carbon frame beyond repair, while an aluminum frame can take a beating.

Titanium combines the best of both worlds: light, strong, stainless and comfortable. But titanium is extremely expensive. A titanium frame quickly costs double or triple the price of a comparable aluminum frame.

For business applications, titanium is rarely worthwhile. The additional cost does not outweigh the benefits, especially with larger bicycle fleets.

Frame strength and load

The belt drive has advantages that perfectly match the properties of aluminum. Both are low-maintenance and resistant to the elements. Whereas a chain requires regular lubrication and can rust, a belt requires virtually no maintenance. This makes the combination ideal for business bikes.

The rigidity of the aluminum frame also works in favor of the belt drive. The belt needs a tightly tensioned frame to perform optimally. A flexible steel frame can interfere with belt tension, but with aluminum everything stays in place.

Maintenance of an aluminum bicycle frame

One of the great advantages of aluminum is its low maintenance. However, some care does extend its life.

Regular cleaning

Wash your bike regularly with water and a mild soap. This removes dirt, salt and other substances that can eventually damage the coating. Do not use a pressure washer, as it can force water into bearings and other sensitive parts.

Checking for damage

Inspect the frame regularly for dents, scratches and cracks in the coating. Small damages can be touched up with paint pen to prevent further damage. For larger dents or cracks in the aluminum itself, it is wise to have the bike checked by a specialist.

Winterizing

Extra attention is needed in winter because of road salt. After riding on gritted roads, rinse your bike with clean water. The salt does not affect the aluminum itself, but it can damage other parts.
