A test drive that is more than “just a lap”
You only find out if an e-bike or electric cargo bike suits you when you excite it: slow steering, hard braking, over a bump, with weight in the cargo box, along streetcar rails. A short ride over a smooth bike path tells you, above all, that the bike works. Stability, braking feel and comfort only surface when you consciously test.
This manual is intended for wide-tire bikes (fatbike-style) and cargo bikes with a solid set of tires. Wide tires often provide extra grip and peace of mind, but they can also steer differently, roll differently and react differently to bumps. The checks below will help you get much more information from one test ride, without turning it into an exam.
Preparation: what to bring and what to agree on?
Make the test drive comparable
If you want to compare two bikes, keep conditions the same. Ride the same loop, with the same support setting and preferably the same tire pressure (or note the difference).
- Clothing: wear shoes you normally cycle with.
- Luggage: bring your own backpack or work bag (preferably 5-10 kg), or ask for ballast in the bin.
- Phone notes: jot down 1-2 sentences after each item. You forget details faster than you think.
- Time: plan for at least 20-30 minutes. For a cargo bike with loading/unloading, preferably 30-45 minutes.
Check the basic settings before you leave
Many “comfort problems” come from improper adjustment. Have the saddle and handlebars adjusted so you sit relaxed: knees not too high, wrists not bent.
- Saddle height: your leg almost extended at the bottom of the pedal stroke.
- Saddle position: your pelvis stable, no feeling of sliding forward.
- Handlebar width and height: shoulders low, elbows slightly bent.
- Brake levers: you should be able to brake with two fingers without overstretching your wrist.
The test drive route: build it up in blocks
A good test drive follows a set order: first habituation, then technique, then realistic situations. Ask where you can safely brake hard and if there's a place with speed bumps, bricks or a short stretch of unpaved road.

Stability testing: slow is often hardest
Stepwise slalom
Ride as slowly as possible and make small steering movements, as if you were going through a narrow passage. A stable bike feels “calm” and can be corrected without you fighting with the handlebars.
- Does the front wheel feel “searching” or just predictable?
- Can you briefly indicate your direction with one hand without swaying?
- With a cargo bike: do you notice that the cargo box “pushes back” your handlebars or does it stay neutral?
Start-stop with one foot on the ground
Much instability shows itself when pulling away and stopping. Practice three times: roll out, almost stop, one foot down, pull up again gently.
- Can you get on and off easily without the bike tilting away?
- With wide tires: does the bike feel top-heavy or planted?
- With cargo bike: does the bike stay straight when you shift your weight?
Streetcar rails and slots: choosing approach angle and line
Streetcar rails are a well-known pitfall in the city. Test this only where it is safe and by a wide margin. The bottom line: approach rails or gutters at right angles as much as possible and look further ahead than your front wheel.
- How much correction is needed when crossing the track?
- Do you feel “pulling” on the handlebars or does the bike stay on course?
- Do you dare to continue braking calmly or do you stiffen up?

Brake testing: braking power is not enough
The three brake tests (dry and controlled)
Test braking on a flat stretch with an overview. Build up: soft braking first, then firm, then an emergency braking simulation. Do this without traffic behind you.
- Test 1: dosage - drive 15 mph and brake gradually to a stop. You are looking for a predictable point of engagement.
- Test 2: firm braking - drive 20-25 km/h, brake vigorously but in a controlled manner. Pay attention to front-end diving and straight-line stability.
- Test 3: emergency stop (simulation) - drive 25 km/h, brake as hard as you dare without locking up. Note: Does the steering wheel pull to one side?
What to look out for in your hands
It's not just the braking distance that matters, but the feel. A good braking system provides feedback without suddenly being “on/off.”.
- Brake lever: does it stay firm or does it feel spongy?
- Rattles or vibrations: do you feel pulsing in the lever or whole bike?
- Repeatability: does braking feel the same after three times, or does it change?
Braking with weight
Wide tires and cargo bikes are often chosen to carry. Ask if you can put ballast in the cargo box or take groceries with you. Then repeat at least Test 2.
- Does the bike stay straight, or does it want to break out?
- Do you have to squeeze harder for the same effect?
- With cargo bike: does the load slide or does everything stay stable?
Comfort testing: vibration, posture and “rest” in your body
Cobblestones, speed bumps and bad asphalt
Comfort is a combination of tires, frame, any suspension and your riding position. Ride on purpose over a stretch you normally prefer to avoid.
- Hands: tingling or numbness after a few minutes?
- Shoulders: will you automatically pull up to absorb shocks?
- With cargo bike: do you hear rattles from the bin or does it remain quiet and solid?
Sitting position and visibility in traffic
A comfortable bike is also one on which you look around relaxed. Test shoulder check a few times and take a turn while looking over your shoulder.
- Do you keep driving straight during a shoulder check?
- Do you have sufficient overview of steering wheel, bucket and traffic?
- With wide tires: do you feel the bike “wants to go straight” or does it steer naturally?
Cornering and swerve: grip and predictability
Big turns: constant pace
Take a wide turn at even speed. You're looking for a bike that feels neutral, with no surprises.
- Does the bike hold the line, or do you have to keep correcting?
- Do you feel grip loss or sliding, even subtly?
- With bakfiets: do you feel wet vibrations or “afterturns” from the front end?
Short evasive maneuver (safe and step by step)
Simulate an unexpected situation by making a gentle S-movement around 15-20 km/h. No sharp steering snap, just a realistic swerve.
- Does the bicycle respond immediately and predictably?
- Does your upper body stay calm, or does it feel nervous?
- Does the bike easily return to straight?
Loading and unloading at a cargo bike: the downtime test
Standard and stability
With a cargo bike, stationary behavior is almost as important as riding behavior. Put the bike on the stand, push gently against the handlebars and see how much “play” there is.
- Can the stand be operated with one motion?
- Is the bike really stable or does it wobble?
- Can you safely load and unload without catching everything with your body?
Baking space and practical access
Bring a bag or crate and test how you place and pick it up again. A bin can be spacious but awkward to reach.
- Do you have to stoop far or can you work logically?
- Is the non-slip floor palpably “secure” for your load?
- Can you secure the load or will it stay down by itself?
Quick decision checklist (printable in your head)
If in doubt after the test ride, walk through these items in 60 seconds. Give each item a score of 1-5 and compare bikes on overall view.
- Stepwise steering feels calm and controllable.
- Hard braking remains straight and predictable, even with weight.
- Cornering feels neutral; few corrections needed.
- Uneven surfaces do not cause annoying vibrations in hands or back.
- Streetcar rail/gutter crossing can be controlled (with safe approach).
- With cargo bike: stand is stable and loading/unloading goes without saying.

Do wide tires suit your use?
Wide tires are often chosen for extra grip, stability and comfort on changing road surfaces. For some riders, steering feels a little different at first than on a narrow city tire.
