Is a cargo bike a full-fledged substitute for a family car?

In many cases, a cargo bike can be a full-fledged replacement for a family car, especially in urban areas. For families traveling primarily short to medium distances, a electric cargo bike a practical, environmentally friendly and often cost-effective alternative. Its capacity for child transport, shopping and daily activities makes the cargo bike particularly suitable for families in urban areas, while the electric assistance significantly increases range and comfort.

Why are more and more families considering a cargo bike?

More and more families are choosing a cargo bike as their primary means of transportation because of the combination of practical, financial and environmental benefits. In Dutch cities, we see a clear shift towards sustainable mobility.

"Times are changing," explains Joeri. "Five years ago, a cargo bike was 'fun for Sundays.' Now I see families who have their whole lives set up on it. And they are happier than ever."

The growing popularity does not come out of the blue. Cities are becoming less and less car-friendly with environmental zones, limited parking options and rising parking costs. A cargo bike offers a smart solution to this.

The cost element also plays an important role. With rising costs of fuel, insurance and maintenance, car ownership is becoming increasingly expensive. A cargo bike requires a one-time investment and then has very low running costs.

What are the advantages of a cargo bike over a family car?

A cargo bike offers numerous advantages over a family car, especially in terms of cost, flexibility and durability. The immediate financial benefits are immediate.

"The financial picture really doesn't compare," says Joeri. "No parking fees, no fuel, no road tax. I have customers who save thousands of euros a year by switching."

The environmental friendliness of a cargo bike is undeniable. While a car emits CO2, a cargo bike is completely emission-free during use. The cargo bike also often wins in terms of freedom of movement - in busy city centers you often get from A to B faster.

An often underrated benefit is the health aspect. Regular cycling improves your fitness, reduces stress and contributes to a healthier lifestyle. There is also the social aspect: on a cargo bike, you are more connected to your surroundings. Your children have more interaction with the outside world, and you contribute to a more livable neighborhood.

What daily activities can you do with a cargo bike without a problem?

With a cargo bike, you can do surprisingly many daily activities effortlessly that are traditionally done by car.

"People really underestimate what can be done," Joeri explains enthusiastically. "I have customers who transport their entire IKEA purchases, who go on vacation camping, who move with their cargo bike. The creativity is endless."

Grocery shopping is one of the most obvious uses. The spacious bin provides ample space for a weekly supermarket supply. Taking children to school is often even easier than using a car.

For commuting within a 15-kilometer radius, an electric cargo bike is ideal. Small moves or transporting larger items are also easy to do. Even social activities such as children's parties, picnics or a day at the beach are easy to organize with a cargo bike.

What do you run into if you want to be completely car-free?

Although a cargo bike offers many advantages, there are situations where living without a car can be challenging.

"I'm honest with my customers," says Joeri. "A cargo bike cannot solve everything. Longer distances, for example to family in Limburg, remain difficult. But for 90% of your trips, it's perfect."

The most obvious limitation concerns longer distances, such as visiting relatives in other parts of the country. Extreme weather conditions are another concern, although good protection exists.

Certain large purchases can also be tricky - think large furniture or white goods. Spontaneity can also sometimes be curtailed; an unexpected outing to an amusement park 50 kilometers away requires more planning. Finally, hospital visits or medical emergencies can be a challenge, although cabs and ambulances, of course, provide assistance for this.

"Purchased a STOER Bike last year after trying several fatbikes. STOER is by far the best! Still very much enjoy my purchase. In addition, the service is top notch!"
"The bike is perfect for people with long legs. Sitting comfort is perfect for long distances."
"We have been riding a Stoer bicycle for a year now without any problems. Even the battery capacity has not deteriorated. And when you then see other brands where after a year the rust marks are visible I am glad I spent a little more and now have a bike made entirely of aluminum. And this one stays really neat!!!"

How does an electric cargo bike change the picture?

An electric cargo bike fundamentally transforms the mobility experience and removes many objections that keep people from switching from car to cargo bike.

"The electric motorcycle is really a gamechanger," Joeri stresses. "Suddenly everyone can ride it. Grandpas picking up their grandchildren, mothers who have just given birth - the barrier is gone."

The electrical support increases the range considerably, making distances up to 25-30 kilometers very feasible without exhausting effort. Comfort increases enormously thanks to pedal assistance.

Innovation has also led to improvements in other aspects. Modern belt drive offers significant advantages: less maintenance, longer life and a quieter, cleaner riding experience. The range and battery life of modern electric cargo bikes have improved to the point where one charge is more than sufficient for most daily activities.

What does a cargo bike cost compared to owning a car?

The financial comparison between a quality cargo bike and a family car often falls surprisingly in favor of the cargo bike.

"I always do the math with clients," Joeri explains. "A car will quickly cost you 400-600 euros a month in fixed costs. A cargo bike? Maybe 20 euros a year in electricity. The difference is huge."

The purchase price of a good electric cargo bike is between €3,000 and €7,000. A new family car quickly costs €20,000 to €30,000 or more.

The big difference is in running costs. A car brings monthly costs: insurance, road tax, fuel, maintenance and parking fees. This can add up to €300-600 per month. A cargo bike has hardly any monthly costs. Electricity costs are minimal, maintenance limited to €100-150 per year, and there are no costs for insurance or road tax.

Is a hybrid solution with shared transportation the ideal middle ground?

For many families, a combination model with a cargo bike as the primary mode of transportation supplemented by shared transportation offers the perfect balance.

"This is what I usually recommend," says Joeri. "Bakfiets for daily use, and for those few times a year when you really need a car, just rent one. Much smarter than leaving a car that you barely use."

This hybrid approach gives you the best of both worlds: daily mobility without fixed car costs, yet access to a car when you really need it.

With services like Greenwheels or Share Now, you only pay for car use when you really need it. Public transportation can also be an important supplement for longer distances.

For vacations or specific occasions, you can rent a car. The cost of this is dwarfed by the annual cost of car ownership.

Conclusion: the cargo bike as a serious alternative to the family car

After weighing all the pros and cons, it becomes clear that a cargo bike can indeed be a viable alternative to a car for many families, especially in urban areas.

"It's no longer a utopia," concludes Joeri. "I see it every day: families who become happier, healthier and wealthier by switching to a cargo bike. It's a choice that can really change your life."

Whether a cargo bike is the right choice depends on your residential location, distance to daily destinations, family composition and personal preferences. In densely populated areas, a cargo bike often offers only advantages. Technological developments are making this transportation option increasingly attractive. The combination with flexible mobility solutions such as shared cars offers a practical solution for occasional situations.
