Chain wear is one of the most common causes of poor shifting, extra noise and unnecessarily expensive replacements to your drivetrain. Especially with e-bikes and (fat)bikes, more torque is put on the chain, sprockets and derailleur gears. As a result, a chain can “stretch” faster (in reality, the pins and bushings wear out), after which cassette and chainrings also wear out faster.

An e-bike motor delivers extra power exactly when you are pedaling as well. That's nice, but it also means more load on the drivetrain. On a fatbike, this is often compounded by the fact that you ride in harsher conditions (sand, mud, brine) and that wide tires invite low cadence and lots of torque.
The basics: cleaning without damage
Cleaning is the quickest win for longer chain life. Not because your chain needs to be shiny, but because dirt acts like sandpaper between the moving parts.
How often should you clean your chain?
It depends on circumstances. As a rule of thumb, after wet rides, mud, sand, beach or brine, always give it some attention. In dry weather, you can ride longer, but don't wait until the chain is black and sticky.
- Dry and clean weather: lightly clean and re-lubricate every 150-300 km.
