Here's how to choose the perfect fatbike for your body type

Why is choosing the right fatbike so important for your comfort?

A properly fitting fatbike makes the difference between enjoying your ride or having to dismount in pain. The impact of an incorrectly fitting bike is often underestimated, but can lead to back pain, painful knees, and uncomfortable rides. For different body types, there are different bike sizes and settings that provide optimal comfort.

When you ride a fatbike that does not fit your physique, you not only put your riding enjoyment at risk, but also your performance. Your muscles cannot work efficiently, causing you to tire faster. This leads to reduced range and less control over your electric fatbike, especially on challenging surfaces such as snow or loose sand - precisely where fatbikes excel. In this article, we discuss how to find the ideal fatbike for your specific body type, from frame size to saddle position and everything in between.

The challenges in finding a fatbike that fits your body

The search for the perfect fatbike can be daunting, especially since most standard models are designed for the "average" rider. This creates immediate problems for people who are taller, smaller, heavier or lighter than this abstract average. Taller individuals often struggle with frames that are too small, resulting in an unnatural, hunched posture. Shorter riders, on the other hand, may struggle to find a fatbike where they comfortably reach the ground.

Weight also plays an important role in the buy fatbike for adults. Heavier riders benefit from a sturdier frame and wheels that can carry more weight without sacrificing stability. On the other hand, lighter individuals may have difficulty maneuvering a heavy fatbike. In addition to height and weight, the ratio of torso, arms and legs also plays a role. Someone with relatively long legs but a shorter torso needs different bike dimensions than someone with the opposite body type. Standard fatbike sizes do not take these individual differences into account, forcing most riders to make compromises that ultimately come at the expense of comfort and riding enjoyment.

The STOER method: the perfect match system for body and fatbike

We have developed the STOER method to perfect the matching process between rider and fatbike. This method stands for: Style, Technique, Support, Ergonomics and Ride. When selecting the right fatbike for adults we first look at your personal preferences (Style), then your technical needs based on where you want to ride (Technique). Then we determine how much electric support you need (Support), followed by the ergonomics that suit your body (Ergonomics). Finally, we take into account your riding experience and habits (Riding Behavior).

In the ergonomics part of our method, we pay extra attention to body proportions. We measure not only your overall height, but also your inseam, arm length and torso length. This combined data allows us to determine much more accurately which frame size, handlebar height and saddle position are ideal for your unique physique. Through personal advice, you not only get a technically correct bike, but a fatbike that feels like an extension of yourself. This makes longer tours more comfortable and increases your control over the bike, especially in challenging terrain conditions where fatbikes prove their worth.

Choosing the right frame size based on your height

At the choosing fatbike frame size your height is the starting point. Although there is a lot of variation between different brands, you can use the table below as a starting point:

Body lengthRecommended frame sizeStand-over height
150-165 cm15-16 inches (S)approx. 72-75 cm
165-175 cm17-18 inches (M)approx. 75-78 cm
175-185 cm19-20 inches (L)approx. 78-82 cm
185-195+ cm21-22 inches (XL)approx. 82-86 cm

But note that this table is only a starting point. Your inseam is at least as important as your overall height. Measure your inseam by standing with your back against a wall and sliding a book up between your legs until it sits firmly against your crotch. The distance from the top of the book to the ground is your inseam. For a comfortable standing height (stand-over), there should be at least 5 cm of space between your body and the top tube when you stand over the frame.

If you find yourself between two sizes, personal preferences come into play. Choose the smaller frame if you prioritize agility and off-road riding. Go for the larger frame if you focus more on comfort on longer rides or if you prefer a straighter riding position. With a electric fatbike it is especially important to choose the right size, as the extra weight of the motor and battery makes a bike that is too big or too small even more uncomfortable.

Adjustments for different weight classes

In addition to frame size, adjusting components to your weight is essential for an optimal riding experience. For lighter riders (under 70 kg), a standard fatbike may feel too stiff, losing comfort. In this case, tires with lower pressure (around 0.5-0.6 bar) and possibly a saddle with extra cushioning are recommended. For heavier riders (over 95 kg), other recommendations apply: choose tires with more pressure (0.8-1.0 bar) to prevent sagging and pay attention to a reinforced frame with higher weight capacity.

At the buy fatbike for adults of different weight classes, brakes are also an important consideration. Heavier riders benefit from more powerful hydraulic disc brakes, such as Tektro hydraulic brakes, which provide reliable stopping power under all conditions. With electric fatbikes, the motor also plays a role. The Bafang H720 motor, which we use in our bikes, with its torque of 55 Nm provides sufficient support for riders up to about 120 kg. For even heavier riders or use with lots of luggage, a more powerful motor with 95 Nm of torque is recommended, such as the one in our CityX models. Properly adjusting the suspension, if any, based on your weight ensures optimal damping and control while riding on rough terrain.

Handlebar height and saddle position: the key to comfortable riding

The correct handlebar height and saddle position are crucial for long-term comfort on your fatbike. The saddle should be adjusted so that your leg is almost extended when the pedal is at its lowest position. Too low a saddle position leads to inefficient power transfer and knee pain, while too high a saddle causes hamstring strain and instability. The ideal handlebar height depends on your riding style: lower for a sporty stance, higher for a straighter, more comfortable position.

A practical tip for adjusting your saddle at a fatbike for adults: Sit on the saddle with your heel on the pedal in the lowest position. Your leg should be fully extended in this position. Then when you ride with the ball of your foot on the pedal, you get the correct slight bend in your knee. The rule of thumb for handlebar height is to keep your wrists, elbows and shoulders relaxed while riding. For back problems, a higher handlebar position is recommended to reduce pressure on the lower back. The distance between saddle and handlebars (reach) is at least as important. This should correspond to your torso length: people with a shorter torso benefit from a shorter reach, while riders with a longer torso are more comfortable on a bike with a longer reach.

Customer experience: how Jan finally found the perfect fatbike for his build

Jan (47) searched for a long time for a fatbike that suited his build. With his 1.94m height, relatively short legs for his height and 105 kg weight, he found standard models uncomfortable. "I always felt crammed on a bike, especially on longer rides I got back and wrist pain," he says. After several disappointing purchases, Jan came to us for a personal fitting.

During this session we discovered that Jan needed not only an XL frame, but also specific modifications: a handlebar with a higher rise to relieve his torso and a saddle with extra width for better weight distribution. We chose a Ultimate S1 with an aluminum frame that could support his weight well, and adjusted the suspension precisely to his stature. We also advised him on the proper tire pressure for his weight. "The difference is incredible," Jan says enthusiastically. "For the first time, a fatbike feels like an extension of my body instead of a foreign object. I can now do 50+ kilometer tours without any pain." Jan's experience shows how important a which fatbike suits me-approach, rather than settling for standard sizes that are "good enough" for most people.

Frequently asked questions about fatbikes and body type

Is there a weight limit for fatbikes?
Most standard fatbikes have a weight limit of 120-130 kg including luggage. For heavier riders, there are specific models with reinforced frames and wheels that can carry up to 150 kg. With electric fatbikes, also pay attention to the specifications of the motor and battery.

Can I use a fatbike if I am smaller than 1.65m?
Absolutely! There are specific S-size fatbikes that are suitable for smaller riders. Pay extra attention to standover height (the height of the top tube) so you can stand safely when you stop. Some models offer frames starting at 15 inches that are perfect for riders from about 5 feet tall.

How do I know if my current fatbike is the right size?
Check that you have a slightly bent elbow when holding the handlebars, that your knees don't bend too much at the lower pedal position, and that your back feels comfortable after an hour of riding. Discomfort, pain or tingling are signs that your bike may not be the right size or adjusted properly.

Are there specific saddles for different body types?
Yes, saddle choice is very personal and depends on your sit bone distance, flexibility and riding style. Wider saddles provide more support for people with wider sit bones, while narrower saddles provide more freedom of movement for sporty riding.
