When buying a fatbike for young people, it is important to understand the legal requirements. For a regular fatbike without electric assistance, there is no specific minimum age according to Dutch traffic law. They fall under the same rules as regular bikes.
However, stricter rules apply to electric fatbikes. Fatbikes with pedal assistance up to 25 km/h are legal from the age of 16. These are also called EPAC or Pedelec. For more powerful models such as speed pedelecs, other requirements also apply. These may travel up to 45 km/h and require a minimum age of 16. In addition, a mandatory driver's license AM is required.
It is important to note that these rules are specifically about participating in traffic. In fact, different rules may apply on private property or closed circuits. We always recommend that parents supervise young children properly. And, of course, use appropriate protective equipment.
