Gates CDX belt squeaks: what to do to stop noise

A Gates CDX belt drive is known for being quiet, clean and low maintenance. That's precisely why it's extra frustrating when your belt suddenly starts squeaking, creaking or making a scraping noise. The good news: in most cases, belt noise is easily diagnosed and resolved without immediately replacing parts.

  • rear wheel not straight in frame (chain tensioners/track ends)
  • improperly placed spacers
  • crookedly mounted pulley/sprocket
  • shaft that is not completely in the dropout

3) Contamination: sand, salt, mud or a pebble

A belt does not need chain oil, but it can make noise due to dirt. Fine sand acts as an abrasive and can cause a creaking or grinding noise. In winter, brine residue can also cause additional friction and noise.

Even a small pebble between belt and sprocket gives a noticeable ticking or scraping sound that returns with each revolution.

4) Something touches the belt or sprocket

Consider a belt guard, fender, chain guard part, pants guard, or even a cable vibrating against the belt that is mounted too tightly. You can often recognize this because the sound disappears when you put the bike on a stand and let the wheel spin freely (without load) or when you gently push a component away with your hand.

5) Wear or damage to belt or gears

Why does a belt squeak especially in rain or cold?

Water, temperature and dirt change the friction between belt and sprocket. In rain, a thin film of water can temporarily produce a squeak, especially if the tension is just on the low side. In cold, material becomes slightly stiffer, making resonance audible faster.

If you drive a lot in winter conditions, then a short cleaning routine after brine rides often helps more than “recalibrating all the time.” It's the same principle as with brakes: dirt is often the trigger, not the part itself.

Sometimes noise is a symptom of something that you better have professionally checked. Especially on e-bikes with high chainline forces or frames with specific belt tensioners, a small deviation can have a big effect.
