A cargo bike is great around town, but it has to pass through your gate, shed or storage door. Those who discover this only after purchase or delivery often end up with awkward turning, scratches on the window frame or a cargo bike that has to stay outside.

Step 1: measure the narrowest free passage of the door/gate

Don't measure “from frame to frame,” but the narrowest place your cargo bike actually has to go through. That is almost always lower down in the opening, at the level of the wheels and the bin edge.

  • Measure the width three heights: near the ground, at 50-70 cm and at handlebar height.
  • Note hinges, locking bowls, stop bars and other parts that protrude into the opening.
  • Measure with the door in the usual state (for example, 90° open). A door that can open 180° often gives extra clearance.

Write down your result as effective passage (for example, “gate: 86.5 cm free passage at hinges”).

Step 2: Measure the route, not just the door

A cargo bike can fit through a door but still get stuck because of the approach or curve. Therefore, measure the “corridor” before and after as well.

  • Is there at least 1-1.5 meters straight on before the door possible?
  • Will there be an immediate bend? Then measure the narrowest aisle width and check if you can “rotate” the container.
  • Is there a threshold, step or ramp? Note height and length.

If you have a tight turn, “fitting” is often more a matter of maneuvering space than sheer inches.

Step 3: determine the maximum width of the cargo bike to compare

For a fair comparison, you need one number: the maximum width of the cargo bike in your configuration. That's rarely just the bin.

  • Handlebar width (with handles/bars)
  • Bin width including edge, bumper and any fixings
  • Widest point of the undercarriage (for tricycles often the wheel wells or track width)
  • Tires: wide tires can fall just outside fenders
  • Accessories such as rain hood brackets, mirror(s), child seats, bag brackets or an extra sturdy lock

Tip: Put painter's tape on the bakfiets (or on the floor) and mark the widest point on the left and right. Then measure the distance between the marks.

Step 4: calculate a realistic safety margin

Even if the measurements are right on paper, in daily use you don't want to be millimeter-sized. Wind, rush, wet tires and light steering take up space.

  • Handle ideally at least 3 cm clearance total (i.e., 1.5 cm per side).
  • With a heavy e-bike or tricycle: aim rather for 4-6 cm clearance.
  • Have a threshold and need to lift crookedly? Take extra margin.

Step 5: check “practice factors” (threshold, angle, grip)

Breadth is step one. Practice determines whether you are comfortable on a daily basis.

  • Threshold height: can you quietly roll over it without tilting the tray?
  • Door surface: Does the door stay open or fall back? A door closer may be in the way.
  • Substrate: tiles or pebbles make slow maneuvering more difficult.
  • Lighting: in a dark storage room you hit the frame faster.

Common measurement errors (and how to avoid them)

1) Measuring with the door “fully open” when it never is

In real life, a door is often left at 90° by a wall, bicycle, planter or doorstop. So measure in the situation as you use it every day.

2) Measure only the door opening, not the hinge side

On gates, hinges often protrude inward, right where your wheel or bucket should pass. Measure at the narrowest point, and check both sides.

3) Copy width of cargo bike from a brochure

Specifications are useful, but your bike may have wider handles, a mirror or a rain shelter frame. Measure the bike as you store it.

4) Forgetting that steering “coasts” when pushing

When you push a cargo bike by hand through a door, the handlebars often turn a little. This increases the effective width and you hit the frame faster.

5) No allowance for a curve just behind the door

A cargo bike has length. If you have to turn away immediately, you need room for the rear to follow.

Quick decision rule: does it fit or not?

Use this simple check to quickly assess whether you are safe.

  • Passage ≥ maximum bicycle width + 3 cm: mostly trouble-free.
  • Passage ≈ maximum bike width: can, but daily irritant and risk of damage.
  • Passage < maximum bicycle width: almost certainly not without modifications.

If it just doesn't fit: practical solutions

When you are only a few inches short, there is often something to be gained without immediately remodeling. Think in terms of “making room” or “reducing width.”.

Making space at the door/gate

  • Rotate door further open (different stopper or hinge position)
  • Move protruding parts: door handle, hook, striker plate
  • Replace hinges with types that stick out less (have this done if in doubt)
  • Round off/slope off threshold or use a small ramp

Reduce width to cargo bike

  • Flip or remove mirrors temporarily
  • Replacing a wider handlebar with a slightly narrower model (comfort and control remain important)
  • Accessories placed smarter (lock and bag bracket often stick out)

In structurally cramped situations, it also helps to adjust your stalling routine: for example, always push at the bin edge with two hands, or roll the bike in backwards if that feels more stable.
