Dutch nature reserves have different access rules for electric fatbikes. Paved bike paths are accessible in most cases.
You may ride on public roads and regular bike paths. This applies to fatbikes up to 250W and 25 km/h support. Mountain bike trails are sometimes accessible, but rules vary by nature manager.

Protected natural areas, such as Natura 2000 areas, have stricter rules. There, you may only drive on paved roads and designated trails. Sensitive areas remain completely closed to motorized vehicles.

The difference is in physical characteristics. Fatbikes have wider tires, often 4 inches or more, suitable for soft surfaces. Nature managers therefore sometimes have different access policies for fatbikes.

Performed fatbikes with more than 250W or faster than 25 km/h fall under moped rules. Then helmet requirements, insurance obligations and a ban on access to nature reserves apply.
Note that some fatbikes can be topped. This use causes your bike to no longer meet legal requirements.

Violation of fatbike rules in nature reserves results in different fines. The amount varies by violation and natural area.
Riding on prohibited trails costs between €95 and €140. With a souped-up fatbike, you pay up to €380. You are then also driving an uninsured motor vehicle.

Forest rangers, nature wardens and police conduct enforcement. They check if your fatbike meets the legal requirements. In some cases, they confiscate your fatbike.
Repeated violations lead to a ban on access to natural areas. This poses both a legal problem and an ethical issue.
