The use of fatbikes in the Netherlands has become increasingly popular in recent years. But are you really allowed to use a fatbike without pedaling? According to Dutch law, there are specific rules that apply to electric bikes, including fatbikes. It is important to know that, as with other electric bikes, fatbikes must meet certain conditions to be used legally on the road.
Legislation states that an electric bicycle, or e-bike, is only considered a bicycle if the pedal assistance works only when you pedal. This means that you cannot simply ride without pedaling. Fatbikes that can be ridden without pedaling are basically considered mopeds and therefore must comply with the associated regulations, such as wearing a helmet and having a license plate.
