Why the weight of your business fatbike matters
The weight of a business fatbike directly affects how you as a business owner ride on a daily basis. A lighter fatbike is more maneuverable in heavy city traffic, while a heavier model offers more stability when transporting goods. That's why it's smart to think carefully in advance about which weight best suits your activities. In this blog you can read exactly which factors determine the weight, how much different models weigh and how to find the ideal balance between practicality and riding performance.
Whether you are delivering packages, visiting customers or simply cycling to the office, the weight of your business fatbike largely determines your riding experience. An electric fatbike weighs between 22 and 35 kilograms on average, depending on the type, battery capacity and any additional equipment. This weight difference may seem small, but in practice you will notice the difference immediately when accelerating, maneuvering and parking your bike.

What factors determine the weight of a business fatbike?
The weight of a business fatbike is determined by five main components: the frame material, the battery, the motor, the tires and any accessories. Each of these parts contributes to the overall weight, and as a business owner, it's helpful to know exactly where those pounds come from.
The frame material
Most business fatbikes have an aluminum frame because this material offers a good balance between strength and weight. On average, an aluminum frame weighs 3 to 5 kilograms less than a steel frame, while still being sturdy enough for daily heavy use. Steel, while stronger, is also considerably heavier. Carbon is the lightest of all, but often less suitable for business use due to its higher price and greater sensitivity to shocks.
At STOER Bikes, we deliberately choose heavy duty aluminum frames. This material is light enough for comfortable riding, but at the same time strong enough to last for years. Our UrbanX is a good example of this: solidly built, but with a weight that remains pleasant for daily use.
The battery: often the toughest part
The battery is usually the heaviest part of your electric fatbike. A standard battery weighs between 2.5 and 4 kilograms, but larger batteries with more capacity can reach up to 6 kilograms. A larger battery means more range, but also extra weight that you carry with you every day.
For business use, this consideration is very important. Do you drive short distances around town every day? Then a lighter battery with less capacity may be sufficient. On the other hand, do you travel long distances or visit many customers in one day? Then a heavier battery with longer range is probably the better choice. Our 720Wh battery offers a range of 80 to 100 kilometers, enough for most business trips.
The motor and drive system
The motor of an electric fatbike weighs an average of 3 to 5 kilograms. The type of drive system also plays a role. A fatbike with traditional chain drive requires a derailleur, cassette and chain in addition to the motor. Together, this adds another 1.5 to 2.5 kilograms to the total weight.
In this, belt drives are an interesting alternative. A Gates CDX belt drive, as we use at STOER Bikes, weighs only 0.8 to 1.3 kilograms. That easily saves half to one and a half kilograms compared to a traditional chain system. Plus, with belt drive, you don't need lubrication, which means you don't have to carry the extra weight of chain oil or cleaning agents. This is especially nice if you visit clients with your fatbike and want to look well-groomed.

Fatbike tires: wide but not light
A fatbike's distinctive wide tires are an important part of its overall weight. A single fatbike tire weighs an average of 1.5 to 2.5 kilograms, which amounts to 3 to 5 kilograms for both tires together. This is considerably more than on a standard bike, where tires often weigh only 0.5 to 1 kilogram each.
Yet those wide tires also have great advantages for business use. They offer more grip on wet or slippery surfaces, give extra comfort on cobblestones and bumpy roads, and keep you from getting stuck in streetcar rails. Especially in urban areas, the latter is a big plus. The thick CST 20×4 inch tires on our models are specially selected to optimize this balance between grip, comfort and weight.
Business accessories and their weight
As an entrepreneur, you often need additional equipment on your fatbike. Think of a rear carrier, transport box, extra lights or a security system. Together, these accessories add 3 to 8 kilograms to your bike, depending on exactly what you need.
A rear carrier for a child seat or bags weighs an average of 1 to 2 kilograms. A sturdy transport box adds another 2 to 4 kilograms. Additional lights and a GPS tracker together usually weigh less than half a kilogram, but add to the safety and findability of your bike.
At STOER Bikes, we offer a complete range of accessories that are specially designed for our bikes. This ensures that everything fits properly and that the overall weight remains manageable.
How much does an average business fatbike weigh?
A standard electric fatbike for business use weighs between 22 and 28 kilograms without accessories. With business additions such as transport boxes, extra lights or a child seat, this rises to 25 to 32 kilograms. Cargo bikes with fatbike features are even heavier and usually weigh between 30 and 40 kilograms.
Weight classes and their characteristics
Light models around 20 to 22 kilograms are ideal for business owners who need to maneuver a lot in busy city centers. They are more maneuverable, easier to park and easier to lift when needed. The downside is that they often have a smaller battery and therefore offer less range.
Mid-range fatbikes of 25 to 30 kilograms offer a good balance between maneuverability and carrying capacity. This category is popular with entrepreneurs who regularly transport goods but also need flexibility in traffic. The STOER UrbanX falls into the heavier category, weighing about 35 kilograms, but therefore also offers extra stability and a generous load capacity of 180 kilograms.
Heavy models over 30 kilograms are often cargo bikes or fatbikes with extended load capacity. They are more stable when carrying heavy loads, but require more effort when maneuvering without motor assistance. Our CargoX cargo bike is a good example of this. With a maximum load capacity of 150 kilograms and room for 2 to 4 children, this model is specially designed for intensive transportation.
Comparison table: weight by type of fatbike
| Type of fatbike | Weight without accessories | Weight with accessories | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light city bike | 20-22 kg | 23-26 kg | Consultancy, customer visits |
| Mid-range fatbike | 25-30 kg | 28-34 kg | Deliveries, commuting |
| Heavy duty fatbike (such as UrbanX) | 30-35 kg | 33-40 kg | Heavy transport, passengers |
| Bakfiets (such as CargoX) | 35-45 kg | 40-50 kg | Family transport, large loads |
Chain or belt drive: which is lighter?
Fatbikes with belt drive are usually 0.5 to 1.5 kilograms lighter than similar models with chain drive. This difference is because the belt itself is lighter than a metal chain, and because fewer parts are needed for the complete system.
Weight comparison of drive systems
A traditional full sprocket chain weighs an average of 1.2 to 2 kilograms. In contrast, a belt drive system such as the Gates CDX weighs only 0.8 to 1.3 kilograms. This difference may seem small, but for entrepreneurs who travel long distances daily, every kilogram is less noticeable in riding comfort.
In addition, belt drive eliminates the need for a derailleur, saving additional weight. Since you don't have to change gears, the system is simpler and therefore lighter. An added benefit is that you don't need lubrication, which also eliminates the need to carry chain oil on your rides.
Benefits of belt drive for business use
In addition to lower weight, belt drive offers other advantages for business users. The belt is low maintenance: you don't have to lubricate it, don't have to tension it regularly, and it doesn't rust. This saves time and money on maintenance, something very valuable for business owners.
The life of a belt is also longer than that of a chain. On average, a Gates CDX belt lasts 3 to 5 times longer than a traditional bicycle chain. This means fewer replacement parts and less time spent on repairs.
"We deliberately chose the Gates CDX belt drive on all of our models," says Thomas of STOER Bikes. "Not only is it lighter and lower maintenance, but it also gives a much quieter ride. That's nice if you ride through residential areas a lot or go out early in the morning."

How does weight affect your daily activities?
The weight of your business fatbike directly affects your handling, your range and how practical the bike is in your daily work. A heavier bike is more stable when transporting goods, but it also requires more energy to move.
Impact on range
Each additional kilogram on your fatbike reduces your range by about 3 to 5 percent. As a result, a 35-kilogram fatbike has about 15 to 25 percent less range than the same model weighing 25 kilograms. This is because the motor has to work harder to propel the extra weight, draining the battery faster.
For business use, this is an important consideration. If you cover many miles daily or visit multiple customers, a lighter model can help you drive longer without recharging. On the other hand, do you have mostly short trips and can recharge in between? Then the extra weight may not matter as much.
Maneuvering and parking
When parking and storing your fatbike, weight makes a big difference. A 35-kilogram bike is considerably heavier to carry up stairs than a 25-kilogram model. This becomes important when you need to store your bike in buildings without elevators or in elevated parking areas.
You also notice the weight difference when maneuvering in heavy traffic. A lighter fatbike responds faster to your steering inputs and is easier to move around obstacles. This is especially useful in narrow streets, when passing parked cars or on busy bike paths.
Stability when transporting loads
On the other hand, a heavier bike actually offers more stability when transporting goods. The lower center of gravity makes the bike less likely to wobble when you have a full transport crate on the back. This is more comfortable and safer, especially at higher speeds or when cornering.
You also notice the benefit of extra weight in worse weather. A heavier fatbike has more grip on slippery or wet surfaces and is less likely to blow away in high winds. For delivery drivers and couriers who ride on in any weather, this can be an important argument for a heavier model.
Which business fatbike suits your needs?
The best business fatbike for your situation depends on your transportation requirements, the distances you travel and the area in which you work. Below we discuss three common scenarios with matching recommendations.
For consultants and client visits
Do you work as a consultant, advisor or broker and visit clients regularly? Then a lighter fatbike between 20 and 25 kilograms is often the best choice. You probably don't have a lot of cargo to carry, but want to be able to move quickly and agilely around town.
When choosing a model with sufficient range for your daily rides, pay attention to a model with sufficient range. A battery of 500 to 720Wh is usually more than sufficient for urban use. Also choose a model with neat looks, because when you visit customers you want to look neat. The CityX with its low entry and sleek design is an excellent option here.
For delivery drivers and couriers
Do you operate as a delivery driver, courier or deliver goods to customers? Then a medium to heavy fatbike of 25 to 35 kilograms is probably more appropriate. You need the extra stability for transporting packages, and the larger battery ensures sufficient range on busy days.
Invest in good transport options such as a rear rack or front rack. Also consider a model with GPS tracking for the safety of your bike and your loads. At STOER Bikes, all of our models come standard with GPS functionality and a PIN code immobilizer.
For families and child transportation
Do you also use your business fatbike to transport children or large loads? Then a cargo bike like the CargoX the logical choice. With a load capacity of 150 kilograms and room for several children, this model combines business transportation with family use.
The CargoX does weigh more than a standard fatbike, but that extra weight translates into stability and safety. The thick fatbike tires keep you from getting stuck in streetcar rails, which is a big safety advantage, especially in cities. The powerful 92Nm motor provides enough support to ride smoothly even with a full load.
Tips to reduce the weight of your fatbike
Want to reduce the weight of your current business fatbike without sacrificing functionality? Here are a few practical tips:
Opt for a smaller battery if your daily distances are limited. A 500Wh battery is lighter than a 720Wh variant and still provides enough range for many urban trips. It often saves 1 to 1.5 kilograms.
Replace steel accessories with aluminum variants. An aluminum rear rack or bike basket weighs less than the steel version, while the carrying capacity is similar. This can save you 0.5 to 1 kilogram per accessory.
Bring only the gear you really need. It's tempting to stuff your bike with bags and tools, but each item adds weight. Regularly evaluate what you bring and remove unnecessary items.
Consider belt drive if you have yet to purchase a fatbike. As discussed earlier, this saves 0.5 to 1.5 kilograms compared to chain drive, plus you don't need any maintenance materials.
Schedule a test drive and experience the difference
The weight of a business fatbike may sound abstract until you ride it yourself. That's why we always recommend taking a test ride before making a final choice. Only then will you really notice how a certain weight feels when accelerating, braking and maneuvering.
At STOER Bikes you can get a test ride plans on one of our models. That way you can experience the difference between the lighter CityX and the tougher UrbanX for yourself. Our experts will be happy to help you find the perfect balance between weight, range and practicality for your business situation.
