Several subsidies are available in the Netherlands that make the purchase of an electric cargo bike more accessible. These schemes vary by municipality and province, and can be quite large in amount.
"For the CargoX, there are often excellent subsidy opportunities," notes Laurens. "Especially in big cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam."
In several cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht, there are specific purchase subsidies for electric cargo bikes. These subsidies are designed to encourage business owners to switch to sustainable transportation. The amounts usually vary between €1,000 and €2,000 per cargo bike.
In Amsterdam, for example, there is the 'Clean Air' program, which allows entrepreneurs to be reimbursed up to 20% of the purchase value, with a maximum of €2,000. In Utrecht, there is the 'Stimuleringsregeling Schoon Vervoer' with similar conditions.
In addition to local subsidies, there are also national schemes such as the MIA/VAMIL mentioned earlier. These tax advantages can be combined with local subsidies, making the total savings even higher.
To apply for a grant, you usually follow these steps:
- Check with your municipality or province to see what schemes are available
- Apply for the subsidy before purchasing the cargo bike
- Awaiting approval
- Purchase the cargo bike by the deadline
- Submit supporting documents (purchase invoice, proof of payment)
Note that grants are often available on a temporary basis and the budget may be limited. So it pays to act quickly when a scheme is announced.
