The weight in the box directly affects several aspects of your electric fatbike. First, the ride characteristics change noticeably when you carry extra weight. The bike reacts differently to steering movements and requires a longer braking distance, which requires habituation on the part of the rider.
Battery life is significantly affected by extra weight. The heavier the load in your bucket, the harder the motor has to work to maintain the same speed. This results in increased energy consumption and therefore reduced range. A fully loaded cargo bike can reduce the range by 20-30%.
"The beauty of our powerful Bafang motor is that you hardly notice the extra weight while riding," explains Joeri. "Of course the battery drains faster with a heavy charge, but the motor compensates for the weight so well that you can still ride comfortably."
Stability also changes when you add weight to your cargo bike. At lower speeds, a heavy load can actually provide more stability due to the lower center of gravity. However, at higher speeds or during sharp turns, the extra weight can lead to increased risk.
Fatbike tires play an important role in compensating for these effects. Their wide tread provides a larger contact surface with the road, resulting in better grip and stability, even with a heavy load.
Modern electric drive systems are designed to provide additional assistance when needed, such as when pulling away with a heavy load.
