The weight of an electric fatbike is determined by various components and design choices. Frame construction is one of the most decisive factors. Aluminum frames are the most common because of their good balance between strength and weight. Premium models sometimes use carbon frames, which are lighter but also more expensive.
The battery is another heavy component. A standard battery for an e-fat bike weighs about 3-6 kg, with larger capacities meaning more weight. Modern lithium-ion batteries offer the best capacity-to-weight ratio.
"The CityX has a large battery but remains convenient due to clever design," notes Thomas. "We integrate everything neatly into the frame."
The electric motor contributes about 2-4 kg, depending on the type and power. Center motor systems tend to be heavier but offer better weight distribution than hub motors.
An innovative development that contributes positively to weight optimization is the belt drive. Compared to a traditional chain drive, a belt system is not only lighter, but also lower maintenance and quieter.
In addition, accessories play a role that should not be underestimated. Fenders, luggage racks, lights can collectively add 2-4 kg to the total weight.
