Cold weather slows down the chemical processes in lithium-ion batteries. As a result, they become less efficient. At low temperatures, the battery's internal resistance increases. This directly affects how much energy is available during your ride.
"In my experience, especially from 5 degrees below zero, you really notice that your battery performs less," Thomas says. "Then just plan some shorter rides or take an extra battery with you."
In an e-bike battery, lithium ions move between the positive and negative electrode during discharge and charging. This movement is much slower when the temperature drops. Below 10°C, batteries already begin to operate less efficiently. Below freezing, available capacity can drop dramatically.
In addition, cold also affects the electrolyte in the battery. This is the liquid that causes the movement of ions. At low temperatures, this liquid thickens. This further impedes ion movement. This explains why your e-bike suddenly seems to have less power on cold winter days.
The good news is that these effects are temporary. They do not cause permanent damage if you treat your battery with care. Once the temperature rises again, full capacity returns.
