E-fatbike VS E-bike, what are the differences?

These extra-wide tires therefore provide significantly more stability and traction on challenging surfaces. Because of their wider tires and more robust design, e-fat bikes are ideally suited for off-road use. They can therefore handle rough terrain such as dirt roads, forest trails and even snow more easily. However, they are also particularly pleasant in urban areas with lots of speed bumps, streetcar rails and bumpy cobblestone streets. This is because the wide tires absorb shocks effectively and ensure that you do not get stuck in streetcar rails. Moreover, they offer extra grip on slippery surfaces in rainy weather, making your ride safer in all weather conditions.

Traditional e-bikes are mainly intended for use on paved roads. They are therefore suitable for urban, suburban or landscape roads with good asphalt. On these surfaces, e-bikes perform excellently due to their efficient rolling resistance. However, they do not handle as well on unpaved paths or technically challenging terrain. This is because the narrower tires offer less grip on loose surfaces such as gravel or mud.

Speed and range: what can you expect?

Both e-fatbikes and e-bikes must meet the same legal requirements in the Netherlands. Nevertheless, there are differences in range and handling that affect your daily use.

E-fat bikes, like regular e-bikes, are subject to some strict regulations. Therefore, the maximum speed is 25 km/h with a maximum power of 250 watts. However, due to their weight and higher rolling resistance, the range of e-fat bikes is slightly less than regular e-bikes. On average, you can ride an e-fat bike between 60 and 100 kilometers on one battery charge, depending on the terrain and support mode.
