No, cargo bikes do not have special rights of way in traffic. They must follow the same rules of right of way as all other road users. This means that at intersections without traffic lights or signs, traffic from the right has the right of way.

On traffic circles, it can sometimes be confusing. In most cases cyclists (and thus also cargo bikes) on a traffic circle have priority over traffic that wants to enter the traffic circle. However, this can vary from municipality to municipality. Always pay close attention to the signs and markings.

With a cargo bike, you can basically ride anywhere a regular bicycle is allowed. This means you have to use the bike path when it is available. Is there no bicycle path? Then you may ride on the roadway.

Specific rules often apply to pedestrian areas such as shopping streets. In some areas, bicyclists (and therefore cargo bikes) are not allowed at all. In other areas only during certain times. Therefore, always pay attention to the traffic signs.

An important consideration is that some bike lanes may be too narrow for wider cargo bikes. In that case, you may legally ride on the roadway. However, it is wise to do so only if there is really no other way. This promotes traffic flow and safety.

Electric cargo bikes with pedal assistance up to 25 km/h (also called pedelecs) are subject to the same rules as regular cargo bikes. They are legally considered bicycles and are allowed to use bike paths.

Different rules apply to faster electric cargo bikes:

• An electric cargo bike that supports up to 25 mph: is considered an ordinary bicycle, no helmet requirement
• An electric cargo bike that supports between 25 km/h and 45 km/h: is considered speed-pedelec, mandatory use of license plate, driving license AM and helmet

For cargo bikes with a electric motor that provides assistance without you pedaling (full electric drive), different rules apply. These are often classified as mopeds or mopeds. It depends on the speed limit.

You do not need a driver's license for a standard cargo bike or an electric cargo bike with pedal assistance up to 25 mph. These vehicles are considered regular bicycles. In the Netherlands, you do not need a driver's license for bicycles.

For faster electric cargo bikes, such as speed pedelecs that support up to 45 km/h, you do need a driver's license. For this, an AM (moped) license or other valid motor vehicle license is sufficient.

Although there is no legal age limit for riding a standard cargo bike, we recommend that riders be at least 16 years old. This is because of the weight and maneuverability of a cargo bike. Especially if children are being transported in it.

Laurens notes, "I sometimes see teenagers with a CargoX, but do recommend proper practice first. It's different from a regular bike anyway."

Cargo bikes are basically subject to the same parking rules as regular bicycles. They may be parked in bike racks or designated bike parking areas. However, due to their size, cargo bikes may not always fit in standard bike racks.

Many cities have dedicated parking spaces for cargo bikes. These are often recognizable by their wider size and sometimes feature a specific cargo bike symbol. It is always advisable to take advantage of these facilities when available.

Laurens advises, "There are more and more dedicated cargo bike spots in Amsterdam. Use them! Our CargoX is much safer there than just standing against a tree."

Additional rules may apply for parking on private property, such as at shopping centers or your workplace. Check with the manager about the options for parking a cargo bike.

Cargo bikes must meet the same legal safety requirements as regular bicycles. This means they must have working brakes, reflectors and lights when it is dark or in poor visibility.

Specifically, for cargo bikes:

• Front and rear light (white front, red back) that attaches to the bicycle and is highly visible

The main consideration when riding a cargo bike is to take into account the larger turning radius and heavier weight. This requires a modified driving style. Especially when taking turns, going up and down curbs and braking.
