What questions do you ask when test driving an e-bike?

A test ride is the moment when you discover whether an e-bike or e-fat bike suits your body, your route and your expectations.

Still, many test drives remain superficial: a quick lap around the block, a short gear test and done.

With the right questions, turn your ride into a practical checklist that truly assesses comfort, safety, stability and reliability.

Why do questions work better than “just trying”?

Questions force you to feel, look and compare in a focused way.

You avoid going off mostly on the initial “wow feeling” (speed, looks, novelty) only to find later that your stance or brakes are not right.

In addition, a demand-driven approach helps to test fairly in situations similar to your everyday use: speed bumps, curves, traffic lights and poor road surfaces.

Before you get on: what questions do you ask the dealer or provider?

The test ride starts before you even ride your bike.

With a few smart questions, check that you are making a fair comparison and that the bike is set up correctly.

1) Is this e-bike adjusted for my height and weight?

Ask if saddle height, handlebar position and tire pressure are set for you.

A saddle that is too low or tires that are too soft make a bike feel unstable or “heavy” when that is not representative.

  • Is the saddle at a height where your knee remains slightly bent at the bottom of the pedaling motion?
  • Can the handlebars be higher/lower or closer/further away?
  • What tire pressure do you recommend for my use (city, child, cargo, commuting)?

2) What mode(s) of support should I test?

Many people only drive “turbo” and then think the engine is great.

Ask what modes are realistic for daily driving and test them deliberately.

  • How does it drive in eco (quiet, economical)?
  • How does center position feel when accelerating?
  • Is the highest setting controllable or just nervous?

3) What is the return, service and warranty process?

An e-bike is also a piece of electronics, with battery, display and sensors.

Ask specifically where you can go in case of an outage and how fast help is.

  • Where can I have service done: with you, through dealers or on site?
  • What is covered by warranty and what is wear and tear?
  • How is software or diagnostics arranged?

4) Is my posture immediately right or do I have to compensate?

Pay attention to what your body does automatically.

If your shoulders lift, wrists buckle or your neck becomes tense, the adjustment or geometry may not be appropriate.

  • Does the handlebar height feel natural, or do you lean too much on your hands?
  • Can you relax looking straight ahead without overstretching your neck?
  • Do knees and hips feel smooth, or do you “push” uncomfortably?

5) How predictable is acceleration at stoplights?

In the city, acceleration is often more important than top speed.

Test several times: roll away slowly, then turn on firmly, and also drive off in a curve.

  • Does the support come on gradually, or does it suddenly kick in?
  • Can you start dosed with one pedal stroke?
  • Does it react differently in wet pavement or cobblestones (if any)?

6) Does it brake powerfully and with controllability?

Brakes should not only be strong, but also dosable.

Do at least three brake tests: gentle braking, firm braking, and an emergency stop (safe, straight, with space).

  • Is the brake lever travel logical, or does the brake come “on/off”?
  • Does the bike stay straight, or does it pull to one side?
  • Is there squeaking, scraping or vibration?
  • Do you feel confidence when braking on uneven surfaces?

7) How stable does the bike feel at low speed?

Stability you notice especially slowly: slaloming between bollards, a tight turn, riding at walking pace.

A bike that only rides “nice and hard” can still be inconvenient in practice when parking or turning.

  • Can you stay step straight without wobbling?
  • How easily can you make a U-turn?
  • Does the steering feel quiet or just “searching”?

8) How does the bike behave on bad road surfaces and speed bumps?

Deliberately take a route with bricks, a manhole cover, speed bumps or a stretch of bad asphalt.

Pay attention to what the tires and frame do, and how your body takes the hits.

  • Does the front wheel stay quiet, or do you get ticks through in your hands?
  • Is there any rattling (fender, rack, battery)?
  • Does the bike feel stable when you cross a threshold while seated?

9) How quiet and smooth is the drive when driving?

Noise and “roughness” say something about comfort, but sometimes also about tuning or quality.

Pay attention during constant 20-25 km/h driving and during gradual acceleration.

  • Do you hear a high-pitched buzz, a tick, or a scraping sound?
  • Does the pedal resistance feel natural, or like the motor is pushing without rhythm?
  • Does the support respond consistently, even if you stop pedaling briefly?

10) How “confident” does steering and cornering feel?

Cornering is a combination of tires, steering angle, weight and your stance.

Test wide turns as well as short right-angle turns, preferably at different speeds.

  • Does the bike fall comfortably into the corner, or do you need to correct?
  • Does it stay stable when you brake lightly in the turn?
  • Do you have enough grip feel on front and back?

11) How does shifting (or automatic) work in practice?

You don't test shifting only on a straight stretch, but rather when accelerating and climbing slightly.

If the bike has automatic gears, ask when and how it shifts and try if that feels logical.

  • Can you downshift quickly before a stoplight?
  • Is there crackling or slipping when applying power?
  • Does the cadence (pedaling frequency) match your pace?

12) Does the practical use fit my day?

An e-bike can ride great, yet be awkward in daily hassles.

Therefore, also test “peripheral issues” that affect you every day.

  • Can you get on and off easily (boarding height)?
  • How heavy does the bike feel when pushing, turning or going up a sidewalk?
  • Can you read the display in sunlight and is operation intuitive?
  • Does the stand feel sturdy enough when parking?

After the ride: what control questions prevent mis-selling?

After 10-20 minutes you can say a lot, but your brain is also quickly excited.

These questions help you compare rationally.

13) What did I notice about comfort after 15 minutes?

Stress points often come later: tingling hands, shoulders, saddle pain.

Write down immediately what you felt, or you will forget it after a second test drive.

  • Which contact points were pleasant: saddle, grips, pedals?
  • Was there any pressure or irritation anywhere?
  • What tuning would you still like to try?

14) What was I missing to really feel safe?

Safety is often a sum of small things.

Consider braking confidence, visibility, stability and predictability.

  • In doubt at emergency stops or wet clinkers?
  • Is the bike predictable when cornering and riding slowly?
  • Does the lighting and visibility feel “off” for your rides?

15) What conditions do I want in black and white?

Ask for a clear quotation or order confirmation with specifications.

With e-bikes, you don't want to argue later about battery capacity, performance or included service.

  • What battery (Wh) and charger do you get?
  • What accessories are included or recommended?
  • What service(s) are included and what does maintenance cost?

Common mistakes during a test drive (and how to avoid them)

A good test drive does not happen by itself.

These are mistakes that often lead to regret, even though they can be easily avoided.

  • Testing too short: Ride a minimum of 15-20 minutes and deliberately seek variation in surface.
  • Ride in highest support only: Also test eco and mid mode, because you use that more often.
  • Not doing a brake test: metering brakes and emergency braking are essential for confidence.
  • Don't compare: if possible, drive two models on the same route directly behind each other.
  • Skip adjustment: Wrong saddle height makes any bike “not fine.”.

Finally, here's how to plan a test drive that will really benefit you

Plan your route in advance: a few curves, a threshold, a patch of bricks and at least one busy intersection or stoplight moment.
