Business fatbike payback: calculate your ROI

Business fatbike payback: earned within a year?

The business fatbike payback period is often shorter than you think. Under the right circumstances, you will earn a UrbanX within 12 to 18 months. This is due to the combination of low operating costs, tax advantages and savings on parking and fuel. In this article, we calculate it for you with concrete examples.

Whether you're a zzp'er who cycles to clients daily or a company with a small bike fleet, the business case for a business fatbike is often stronger than you expect.

What does a business fatbike cost in purchase?

A quality electric fatbike for business use costs between €3,000 and €3,500. The STOER Bikes models are in this segment:

  • UrbanX: €3,199 (best fatbike 2024 according to AD Fietstest)
  • CityX: €3,299 (low step-in, ideal for city commuting)
  • CargoX cargo bike: from €6,495 (for business transport)

These are the gross purchase prices. After tax breaks are deducted, the net investment becomes significantly lower. We'll come back to that in a moment.

Maintenance cost per year

The annual maintenance costs of a STOER Bikes fatbike are low because of the Gates CDX belt drive. Where a chain requires regular lubrication and replacement, a belt requires virtually no maintenance. Count on:

  • Annual service: €75 to €100
  • Tires (with intensive use): €50 to €100
  • Brake pads: €30 to €50
  • Insurance: €100 to €200 (depending on coverage)

Total: about €250 to €450 per year. That's a fraction of the cost of a car.

How much will you save compared to a car?

The true business fatbike payback is determined by what you save. Compare the cost to an average lease or company car:

Monthly car expenses (average)

  • Lease or depreciation: €300 to €500
  • Fuel (20 km/day): €150 to €200
  • Parking in the city: €50 to €200
  • Insurance: €80 to €150
  • Maintenance: €50 to €100
  • Road tax: €15 to €30

Total: €645 to €1,180 per month

Monthly fatbike fees

  • Depreciation (over 5 years): €53 (UrbanX €3,199 / 60 months)
  • Maintenance: €25 to €35
  • Insurance: €10 to €15
  • Electricity charging: €5 to €10

Total: €93 to €113 per month

Net savings

If you replace a car with a fatbike, you save an average of €500 to €900 per month. At a net savings of €600 per month, you'll recoup a €3,199 UrbanX in just over 5 months, even without factoring in tax breaks.

Tax benefits in 2025

Tax breaks make the business fatbike payback period even shorter. These are the schemes you can take advantage of as a business owner:

VAT deduction

As a VAT taxpayer, you can reclaim the VAT on the purchase. For the UrbanX (€3,199 incl. VAT), that's €555. Please note that for commuting there is a maximum of €130 VAT deduction.

Small-scale investment deduction (KIA)

For an investment above €2,900, you can deduct 28% of the investment amount from your taxable profit. For the UrbanX (€2,644 excluding VAT), that's €740 in KIA. This reduces your taxable profit and thus your tax bill.

Update 7%

If you also use the bike privately, an additional tax rate of 7% applies over the recommended retail price. For the UrbanX, that's €3,199 x 7% = €224 per year. That's €19 per month in additional taxes. Compare that to the additional tax liability of a lease car!

MIA/VAMIL for cargo bikes

Electric cargo bikes such as the CargoX are eligible for additional tax benefits through the Environmental Investment Allowance (EIA) and VAMIL. The MIA offers up to 36% additional deduction, while the VAMIL allows for accelerated depreciation. With an investment of €6,495, this can provide thousands of euros in tax benefits.

Concrete example calculation: UrbanX

Let's concretely calculate the business fatbike payback for a self-employed person purchasing an UrbanX:

Purchase Price UrbanX: €3.199

Tax benefits:

  • VAT refund (max commuting): €130
  • KIA (28% of €2,644): €740

Net investment: €3,199 - €130 = €3,069 (VAT benefit directly)
Plus: €740 x 37% (tax rate) = €274 lower tax due to KIA

Effective investment: €3.069 - €274 = €2.795

Monthly savings: €500 (conservative, relative to car)

Payback period: €2,795 / €500 = 5.6 months

Even with a conservative savings of €500 per month, you will earn back the bike in six months. With higher savings (downtown parking costs, high fuel costs) this can be even faster.

Tip from STOER Bikes founder Joeri

"Many business owners only look at the purchase price and forget the total cost. An UrbanX costs €3,199, but with the tax benefits and savings on parking and fuel, you often recoup that investment within a year. And then you cycle for next to nothing for years after that. The belt drive also saves you €100 to €150 a year in maintenance compared to a chain."

When is a business fatbike most profitable?

The business fatbike payback period is shortest in these situations:

Ideal for:

  • Daily commuting distance of 10 to 30 km (one way)
  • Downtown work with high parking costs
  • Many short trips to customers or clients
  • Replacement of a (second) car
  • Entrepreneurs who value flexibility and speed

Less suitable for:

  • Daily distances over 50 km (one way)
  • Transportation of heavy materials (consider the CargoX)
  • Areas with poor bicycle infrastructure

For entrepreneurs in the first category, the business case is often stronger than expected. The combination of low operating costs, tax advantages and time savings (no traffic jams, instant parking) makes a fatbike a smart investment.

Additional benefits not included in the calculation

The business fatbike payback becomes even more favorable when you factor in these benefits:

Time saving: In the city, a fatbike often gets you there faster than a car. No traffic jams, instant parking. For an entrepreneur whose time is worth €50 an hour, every minute saved provides immediate value.

Health: Daily cycling improves your fitness and reduces stress. Though difficult to quantify, experts estimate the value at €500 to €1,000 per year in reduced absenteeism and increased productivity.

Image: A modern fatbike exudes sustainability and innovation. Customers appreciate entrepreneurs who make conscious choices. The bicycle often becomes conversation material and creates networking opportunities.

Flexibility: With a fatbike you get everywhere. Bike paths, pedestrian areas, narrow alleys. You don't depend on parking spots or traffic.

STOER Bikes insurance

Proper insurance protects your investment. STOER Bikes offers a specially developed bicycle insurance with:

  • New value coverage: 3 years (no depreciation)
  • No deductible in case of theft
  • 24/7 assistance in case of damage or breakdown
  • Arranged directly at the time of purchase through the dealer

With this insurance, your investment is well protected and the business fatbike payback period remains predictable.

In conclusion

The business fatbike payback period is shorter than most business owners think. With today's tax breaks, low operating costs and savings on parking and fuel, you'll often recoup an UrbanX within 6 to 12 months. After that, you'll cycle for years for a fraction of the cost of a car.
