Here's how to choose the perfect fatbike for your body type

A properly fitting fatbike makes the difference between enjoying your ride or having to dismount in pain. The impact of an incorrectly fitting bike is often underestimated, but can lead to back pain, painful knees and uncomfortable rides. For different body types, there are different bike sizes and settings that provide optimal comfort. That's why choosing the right fatbike for your body type is so important.

Why is choosing the right fatbike so important for your comfort?

When you ride a fatbike that does not fit your physique, you not only put your riding enjoyment at risk. Your performance also suffers because your muscles cannot work efficiently. As a result, you tire faster while cycling. This leads to a reduced range and less control over your electric fatbike, especially on challenging surfaces. Especially where fatbikes excel, such as snow or loose sand, control is essential for safety. In this article, we discuss how to find the ideal fatbike for your specific body type.

The challenges in finding a fatbike that fits

The search for the perfect fatbike can be daunting, especially since most standard models are designed for the "average" rider. This creates immediate problems for people who are taller, smaller, heavier or lighter than this abstract average. Taller individuals often struggle with frames that are too small, resulting in an unnatural, hunched posture. Shorter riders, on the other hand, may struggle to find a fatbike where they comfortably reach the ground.

Weight also plays an important role when choosing a fatbike for adults. Heavier riders benefit from a sturdier frame and wheels that can carry more weight without sacrificing stability. In addition, a more powerful motor with more torque is recommended for optimal support. On the other hand, lighter individuals may have difficulty maneuvering a heavy fatbike due to its weight.

In addition to height and weight, the relationship between torso, arms and legs also plays an important role. Someone with relatively long legs but a shorter torso needs different bike dimensions than someone with the opposite body type. Standard fatbike sizes don't take these individual differences into account, so most riders have to compromise.

The STOER method for the perfect match

We developed the STOER method to perfect the matching process between rider and fatbike. This method stands for Style, Technique, Support, Ergonomics and Ride. When selecting the right fatbike for adults, we first look at your personal preferences, followed by your technical needs. Then we determine how much electric support you need and the ergonomic aspects. Finally, we consider your riding experience and habits for the optimal choice.

In the ergonomic part of our method, we pay extra attention to body proportions and individual measurements. We measure not only your overall height, but also your inseam, arm length and torso length for accurate advice. This combined data allows us to determine much more accurately which frame size fits. In addition, we advise on handlebar height and saddle position that are ideal for your unique build. Through personal advice, you not only get a technically correct bike, but a fatbike that feels like an extension.

"We have been riding a Stoer bicycle for a year now without any problems. Even the battery capacity has not deteriorated. And when you then see other brands where after a year the rust marks are visible I am glad I spent a little more and now have a bike made entirely of aluminum. And this one stays really neat!!!"
"Purchased a STOER Bike last year after trying several fatbikes. STOER is by far the best! Still very much enjoy my purchase. In addition, the service is top notch!"
What are the main conclusions about the weight difference between drive systems?
"The bike is perfect for people with long legs. Sitting comfort is perfect for long distances."

Choosing the right frame size based on your height

When choosing the fatbike frame size, your height is the starting point for the right choice. Although there is a lot of variation between different brands, you can use the table below as a starting point. This will give you an indication of which frame size fits your height for optimal comfort.

Body lengthRecommended frame sizeStand-over height
150-165 cm15-16 inches (S)approx. 72-75 cm
165-175 cm17-18 inches (M)approx. 75-78 cm
175-185 cm19-20 inches (L)approx. 78-82 cm
185-195+ cm21-22 inches (XL)approx. 82-86 cm

But note that this table is only a starting point for your choice. Your inseam is at least as important as your overall height in determining the right frame size. Measure your inseam by standing with your back against a wall and sliding a book up between your legs. Slide the book up until it sits firmly against your crotch without discomfort. The distance from the top of the book to the ground is your inseam, a crucial measurement.

For a comfortable standing height (stand-over), there should be at least 5 cm of space between your body and the top tube. This is essential when standing over the frame when stopping or maneuvering. If you find yourself between two sizes, personal preferences play a role in the final choice. Choose the smaller frame if you prioritize maneuverability and off-road riding in challenging terrain. Go for the larger frame if you focus more on comfort on longer rides and more stability.

With an electric fatbike, it is extra important to choose the right size for optimal comfort. This is because the extra weight of the motor and battery makes a bike that is too big or too small even more uncomfortable. This is why we always recommend taking a test ride before making your final choice.

Thomas' tip: Always measure your inseam

Many people forget to measure their inseam and only look at their overall height. This is a common mistake when choosing a fatbike. In fact, two people of the same height can have completely different leg lengths, which greatly affects the ideal frame size. So always take some time to accurately measure your inseam for the best fit.

Adjustments for different weight classes

In addition to frame size, adjusting components to your weight is essential for an optimal riding experience. For lighter riders (under 70 kg), a standard fatbike may feel too stiff, losing comfort. In this case, tires with lower pressure (around 0.5-0.6 bar) are recommended for more cushioning. Possibly a saddle with extra cushioning is also a good addition for extra comfort.

For heavier riders (over 95 kg), other recommendations apply for optimal performance and safety. Choose tires with more pressure (0.8-1.0 bar) to prevent blow-through and extend life. In addition, it is important to pay attention to a reinforced frame with higher weight capacity. At STOER Bikes, all bikes have a maximum weight capacity of 180kg including rider and passenger.

When choosing a fatbike for adults of different weight classes, the brakes are also important. Heavier riders benefit from more powerful hydraulic disc brakes, such as the Tektro hydraulic brakes that come standard. These deliver reliable braking power under all conditions, even on wet or slippery surfaces. With electric fatbikes, the motor also plays a role in choosing different weight classes.

The Bafang H720 motor, which we use in our UrbanX and CityX models, offers sufficient support with its torque of 55Nm. This motor is suitable for riders up to about 120 kg and offers excellent performance. For even heavier riders or use with lots of luggage, a more powerful motor with 95Nm of torque is recommended. This is in our CargoX cargo bike and offers extra power for heavy loads and transportation.

Here's how to choose the perfect fatbike for your body type

Handlebar height and saddle position for comfort

The correct handlebar height and saddle position are crucial for long-term comfort on your electric fatbike. The saddle should be adjusted so that your leg is almost extended when the pedal is at its lowest position. A saddle position that is too low leads to inefficient power transfer and knee pain while cycling. While a saddle that is too high causes hamstring strain and instability when pedaling. The ideal handlebar height depends on your riding style: lower for a sporty posture, higher for more comfort.

A practical tip for adjusting your saddle on a fatbike: sit on the saddle with your heel on the pedal. When the pedal is in the lowest position, your leg should be fully extended in this position. Then, when you ride with the ball of your foot on the pedal, you get the correct slight flex. The rule of thumb for handlebar height is to keep your wrists, elbows and shoulders relaxed while riding.

With back problems, a higher handlebar position is recommended to reduce pressure on the lower back. The distance between saddle and handlebars (reach) is at least as important for comfort during longer rides. It should correspond to your torso length: people with shorter torsos benefit from a shorter reach. While riders with a longer torso are more comfortable on a bike with a longer reach for optimal posture.

Frequently asked questions about fatbikes and body type

Is there a weight limit for fatbikes?
Most standard fatbikes have a weight limit of 120-130 kg including luggage for safe use. For heavier riders, there are specific models with reinforced frames and wheels that can carry up to 150kg. At STOER Bikes, all models have a maximum weight limit of 180kg including rider and passenger. With electric fatbikes, also pay attention to the specifications of the motor and battery for optimal performance.

Can I use a fatbike if I am smaller than 1.65m?
Absolutely! There are specific S-size fatbikes that accommodate smaller riders and allow for comfortable cycling. Pay extra attention to standover height (the height of the top tube) so you can stand safely when you stop. Some models offer frames starting at 15 inches that are perfect for riders from about 6 feet tall. STOER Bikes' CityX has a low step-in, which makes it extra suitable for smaller riders.

How do I know if my current fatbike is the right size?
Check that you have a slightly bent elbow when holding the handlebars for the correct position. Check that your knees do not bend too much at the lower pedal position while pedaling. In addition, your back should feel comfortable after an hour of riding without pain or strain. Discomfort, pain or tingling are signs that your bike may not be the right size or adjusted properly.

Are there specific saddles for different body types?
Yes, saddle choice is very personal and depends on your sit bone distance, flexibility and riding style. Wider saddles provide more support for people with wider sit bones and are more comfortable for longer rides. While narrower saddles provide more freedom of movement for sporty riding and off-road use. At STOER Bikes, all models have luxury leather saddles that are comfortable for different body types.
