Business fatbike maintenance: tips for entrepreneurs

Business fatbike maintenance is different from a regular bike, as daily use and heavier loads wear down parts more quickly. Fortunately, a well-maintained fatbike will last for years and therefore prevent expensive repairs. Therefore, in this article you will read how to keep your business fatbike in top condition, which parts to check and when professional maintenance is needed.

Why does a business fatbike require extra maintenance?

A fatbike that you use daily for work gets a lot more abuse than a recreational bike. After all, you cycle more often and you also travel longer distances. Then add to that the transportation of business stuff and you can understand why more intensive maintenance is needed.

The wide tires of a fatbike collect more dirt and pebbles, especially in urban environments. This makes regular cleaning important, because that's how you prevent wear and tear. On top of that, electric fatbikes have sensitive components that you need to protect from moisture and dirt.

The big difference from a regular bike is mainly in the frequency of maintenance. Whereas a private bicycle needs a basic monthly checkup, a business fatbike, on the other hand, requires weekly attention. That extra investment, however, pays off through a longer service life and therefore less downtime during important appointments.

Tip from Thomas, co-founder of STOER Bikes: "For business use, we therefore recommend a short maintenance check every 500 kilometers. This is because it prevents small problems from becoming major repairs."

How do you clean a fatbike after intensive use?

A clean bike is the basis of good maintenance, so always start by rinsing coarse dirt with lukewarm water. When doing this, work from top to bottom and especially avoid high-pressure jets near electrical components. This can damage seals.

The belt drive also requires a specific approach. Therefore, use a soft brush with mild soap and avoid aggressive degreasers. Unlike a chain, you do not need lubrication with a belt, because a clean, dry belt actually works best.

According to the Bicycle Association a belt drive makes a bicycle virtually maintenance-free. This is because the belt needs no lubrication, it also lasts a long time and pedals as lightly as a chain.

Cleaning steps for your fatbike

A good cleansing routine consists of the following steps:

- First rinse the bike with lukewarm water, i.e. without a high-pressure sprayer
- Then clean the belt with a soft brush and soapy water
- Then brush the tires thoroughly, including the tread
- Then clean the frame with bicycle shampoo
- Finally, dry everything with a clean cloth
- Finally, lubricate moving parts such as hinges and cables

Never use WD-40 or other spray oils on the belt drive, as these agents actually attract more dirt and therefore shorten the life of your belt.

At STOER Bikes, all models come standard with the Gates CDX belt drive. This means you have less maintenance than with a traditional chain. Check out the UrbanX for an example of a low-maintenance fatbike.

What parts should you check weekly?

With intensive business use, there are four components that require weekly attention - brakes, lights, belt drive and electrical systems. After all, these components determine your safety and reliability.

Brakes and brake pads

First, check the brake performance by testing both brakes before you drive off. In addition, look at the thickness of the brake pads. Are they thinner than 2 millimeters? Then you need to replace them. With disc brakes, pay extra attention to squeaks or reduced brake force, as these are often the first signs of wear.

The ANWB therefore emphasizes that hydraulic disc brakes are preferred on fatbikes. In fact, cheaper models often have mechanical brakes, which wear out faster and therefore require more maintenance.

Electrical systems

For your electric fatbike, check the following items weekly:

- First, the battery status level and charging behavior
- In addition, all electrical connections for corrosion
- Next, the display functionality and any error messages
- Finally, engine performance and unusual noises

Pay particular attention to the charging behavior of your battery. Does it charge noticeably faster than before? If so, this may in fact indicate a problem with the battery cells or an incorrect storage temperature.

Belt drive inspection

Inspect the belt regularly for cracks, frayed edges or stretched parts. This is because a properly tensioned belt gives a clear tone when you tap against it. In addition, check the gears for wear and dirt buildup, as dirt between the teeth can damage the belt.

How do you avoid costly repairs?

Preventive maintenance saves you hundreds of dollars a year and also prevents annoying breakdowns during business trips. Proper storage, seasonal attention and early detection of wear are therefore your best defense here.

Proper stabling and storage

Store your fatbike preferably indoors or under a roof, as moisture is the biggest enemy of electrical components, causing corrosion to metal parts. Don't have covered storage? Then use a waterproof bike cover.

Additionally, store your battery indoors at temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius, as cold affects capacity and therefore shortens the life of your battery. Therefore, for longer storage periods, charge the battery to 60-80% and then check it monthly.

Seasonal maintenance

Each season requires specific attention, so below are the most important tips:

Winter: Clean your bike after every ride to remove road salt, as salt quickly corrodes metal and paint. In addition, check tire pressure more often, as cold air lowers pressure.
Spring: Then conduct a full inspection for salt damage and winter wear.
Summer: Pay particular attention to overheating of electrical components at high temperatures.
Autumn: Clean more often due to leaf fall and moisture, and also check lighting for the dark months.

Maintain maintenance log

Therefore, keep a logbook in which you make notes about unusual noises, vibrations or performance degradation. That way, you'll recognize patterns and thus be able to spot problems early. After all, small issues such as a slight creaking noise often indicate incipient wear and tear that can be easily fixed.

According to Central government.com you may also deduct the cost of maintenance and repair of a business bicycle from your profit. So that makes preventive maintenance extra attractive.

What are the maintenance costs for a business fatbike?

Annual maintenance costs for a business fatbike range between €150 and €300, depending on the type of drive and intensity of use. Fatbikes with belt drive cost significantly less in this regard than models with a traditional chain.

In fact, with a chain drive, you have to replace the chain every 2,000-3,000 kilometers. A Gates CDX belt, on the other hand, lasts an average of 20,000 kilometers. In the long run, this saves you hundreds of euros in parts and labor costs.

Cost examples

Below are some common maintenance tasks with associated costs:

- Major service: €50 - €100
- Brake pads replacement: €30 - €50
- Tire replacement: €60 - €100 each
- Belt replacement (if needed): €80 - €120
- Battery diagnosis: €25 - €50

Therefore, invest in quality parts and, in addition, have major maintenance performed by a specialist with experience in fatbikes and belt drives. After all, the extra costs do not outweigh the risks of incorrect repairs.

When do you call in a specialist?

Although you can do much maintenance yourself, however, there are situations in which professional help is wise. That's because for complex electrical failures, engine problems or controller defects, you need specialized knowledge and tools.

Therefore, battery problems beyond a dead battery are also better left to a professional. Moreover, the same goes for frame breaks, suspension problems or hydraulic brakes that don't work properly.

Warranty and workmanship

In addition, keep in mind the warranty terms, as some repairs you do yourself may void the warranty. Therefore, always check the terms and conditions before you get started, especially with new bikes.

In fact, STOER Bikes offers a 2-year warranty on the motor, battery and all moving parts. For maintenance and repairs, you can also visit one of our authorized dealers, where technicians are trained in our systems.
