The power consumption of your electric bike is affected by several factors. The most important are your riding style, the terrain, your weight, the maintenance level of your bike and the type of drive train.
Your riding style has a big impact on battery consumption. The higher the assistance level you choose, the more power you consume. Constant riding at the maximum assistance setting can reduce your range by 30-50% compared with more economical use of the electric assistance.
The terrain you drive on also has a big influence. Hilly terrain demands more from the engine and therefore consumes more power. With headwinds, the same principle applies. Research shows that riding against a strong wind can increase power consumption by as much as 20%.
The total weight (bike, rider and luggage combined) also plays a role. The heavier the total load, the harder the motor has to work and the more power is consumed. This is especially noticeable with electric cargo bikes when fully loaded.
