With an e-bike, fatbike or electric cargo bike, you can rack up many miles without fuss, but minor wear and tear builds up unnoticed. By taking a few simple self maintenance checks e-bike at home do, you'll prevent squeaks, backlash, poor braking and unexpected breakdowns. The nice thing is: you often don't need a special workshop for it.
In this article, you'll get a practical at-home checklist that suits both everyday city use and heavier bikes like e-bikes. You'll learn what you can safely check yourself, what signals to take seriously and when it's smarter to schedule a service.
Why checking at home pays off so much
An e-bike has electronics, a battery and often heavier loads in addition to the ‘regular’ bike components. As a result, brakes, tires and mountings are extra important. Recognizing early signs is usually cheaper than waiting for something to break down.
Consider a brake pad that's worn out, a tire that's too soft or a loose fender. These are small things that instantly make your ride less safe. With fixed checks, you maintain control over comfort, range and safety.
What do you need for a good check?
You'll get far with basic tools and a quiet place. Preferably put the bike upright (stand or against a wall) and make sure you have good light.
Useful basics
- A bicycle pump with pressure gauge (especially important with wide tires)
- Allen wrenches (usually 4/5/6 mm)
- Clean cloth or microfiber cloth
- Degreaser or lukewarm soapy water (no high pressure)
- Optional: chain oil (only for chain drive)
Tip: make it a routine, say every 2 weeks or every 200-300 km. In rain, brine or heavy use, you may do it more often.
The quick safety check in 2 minutes (before each ride)
If you only want to learn one routine, do this one. They are quick checks that prevent many accidents and damage.
- Brakes: squeeze left and right; the lever should not touch the handlebars.
- Tires: Feel with your thumb if the tire is not “spongy”; check visually for cracks or glass.
- Lighting: turn on and walk around the bike for a while.
- Send: Hold the front wheel between your legs and turn the handlebars; nothing should shift.
- Loading: Is there anything loose on luggage carrier, crate or bin?
Tires and wheels: grip, comfort and range
Tire pressure is one of the biggest ‘forgotten’ factors with e-bikes. Too soft means more rolling resistance (less range), more chance of punctures and less stable steering. Too hard, on the other hand, can reduce comfort and grip.
1) Check tire pressure
Look on the tire sidewall for the recommended pressure (often in bar/psi). Use a pump with gauge and preferably check when the tire is cold.
- Also check the valve: is it straight and not leaking?
- Watch for uneven wear pattern; this may indicate under-pressure or misalignment.
If you ride with wide tires (like fatbikes) or with a lot of weight (like cargo bikes), the right pressure is extra important. The optimum point is a balance between comfort and steering precision.
2) Tire tread and damage
Look for pebbles, glass, nails and drought cracks. Also check the cheek (side) of the tire; cracks are often more likely to appear there due to curbs.
Do you see bumps, an “egg” in the tire or threads in the rubber? If so, replacement is wise. When in doubt: don't drive on.
3) Wheel stroke and spoke tension (quick indication)
Lift the wheel and let it spin. Look along brake disc/rim to see if the wheel swings.
- Do you hear ticking noises or the brake running? If so, the wheel or brake disc may be slightly warped.
- Gently squeeze two spokes together; extremely loose spokes are a warning sign.
Straightening a wheel or tensioning spokes is more specialized work. If you feel or see obvious stroke, schedule service.
Brakes: your main maintenance point
E-bikes are heavier and go faster at cruising speed. Good brakes are therefore not a luxury. Hydraulic disc brakes are powerful, but require attention to wear and adjustment.
1) Recognize brake pad wear
With disc brakes, you can often see through the caliper. Is the friction material (the “pad”) still obviously thick, or is it almost gone?
- Metal scraping noise = often too late; then the metal carrier brakes on the disc.
- Longer braking distance or ‘glassy’ feel may indicate contamination or worn blocks.
With rim brakes (less common on heavier e-bikes) check wear lines and cracks in the rubber.
2) Brake disc and brake feel
Do you feel vibration when braking, or does the bike pull to one side? If so, check that the disc is clean and that the wheel is secure.
Does the lever brake spongy or suddenly come closer to the steering wheel? That could indicate air in the system or leakage. That's a time to have a mechanic take a look.
Drive: chain, belt and sprockets
The drivetrain determines how smoothly and quietly your bike rides. Dirt and improper lubrication cause faster wear. The good news: cleaning and checking can be done just fine at home.
1) Chain drive: clean, lubricated and not too slack
If you have a chain, clean it regularly with a cloth. Then apply an appropriate chain oil (preferably drop by drop per link) and wipe off excess oil.
- Too much oil actually attracts dirt.
- Rust or ‘stiff’ links cause skipping and extra resistance.
A chain checker tool helps to measure stretch, but even without a tool you can be alert for: skipping when applying force, rattling or “biting” of the chain.
2) Belt: check for stones, alignment and tension
With a belt drive, you don't need to lubricate. However, it is smart to keep the belt clean and check for damage or stones between the teeth.
- Look for frayed edges, cracks or missing teeth.
- Do you hear squeaking or feel ‘stiff’ running? If so, tension or alignment may not be right.
Tension exact adjustment is brand and model dependent. If in doubt: have it checked to avoid premature wear.
Bolts, handlebars, saddle and rack: slack is a signal
Rattles often come from a little bit of play. With e-bikes and cargo bikes, it is extra important because vibration and weight are higher.
1) Check stem and handlebars
Apply the front brake and push the bike back and forth. If you feel a tick in the steering head (at the front of the frame), there may be play.
Also: try turning the handlebars while the front wheel is fixed. Any movement means that something is not tight.
2) Saddle and seat post
Check that your saddle is not tilting and that the seat post is not slowly sinking. Grease on a regular seat post (not a dropper) can help against sticking, but with carbon parts, always use proper mounting paste.
3) Pedals, crank and bottom bracket
Grasp a pedal and move sideways. Play or tapping while pedaling may indicate a loose crank bolt or wear in the bottom bracket.
Since this directly affects safety and drive feel, this is a good time to schedule service if it can't be solved with “just tightening”.
4) Luggage carrier, fenders and stand
Check that the carrier and fenders are not skewed and that the fasteners are still tight. Take extra care with child seats, crates or heavy bags.
A stand that is loose can collapse unexpectedly when cornering or standing still. This prevents damage to frame and electronics.
Electronics and battery: clean, dry and healthy charging
Electrical components are reliable as long as you treat them cleanly. Water and dirt are especially a problem with connectors and contact points.
1) Checking battery and ignition points
- Remove the battery (if you can) from the bike and check that the contacts are clean and dry.
- Watch for corrosion (greenish tarnish) or moisture in the battery or frame holder.
- Check that the battery locks securely and does not rattle.
Clean contact points only with a dry cloth. Do not use harsh sprays or water.
2) Cables, plugs and display
With your eyes, follow the cables along the frame. Are they not pinched, scraped or tight along a moving part?
Also check the display for cracks and whether buttons respond properly. A faltering button is sometimes simple dirt, but can also indicate moisture.
3) Loading routine and safety
Preferably charge indoors at room temperature and use the original charger. Do not leave a battery empty for long periods, but keep it around a medium charge during longer breaks.

Cleaning without damage
Many problems start with improper cleaning. High-pressure sprayers can force water past bearings and seals. That later causes squeaking, rust and stiff turning.
A safe wash
- Use a bucket of lukewarm water and a soft brush.
- Avoid direct water spray on bearings, motor, display and battery connectors.
- Dry the bike with a cloth, especially around bolts and brakes.
