Baby in cargo bike: from what age is it allowed?

Your baby is here and the world suddenly looks very different. Those first weeks flew by and now it itches to get outside again. Shopping, getting some fresh air or just going out. The cargo bike is ready, but one question keeps you busy: from what age can you take your baby with you in the cargo bike?

The good news? With the right preparations and accessories, you can take your baby in the cargo bike much sooner than you might think. This article will tell you exactly when it's safe, what options you have and how to make the first rides as comfortable as possible for both of you.

Baby in cargo bike: the minimum age

We get the question "from when can a baby be put in the cargo bike?" on a regular basis. The answer depends on how you transport your baby. On a regular bike in a child seat, you should wait until your child can sit independently. That is usually around 9 months. Fortunately, a cargo bike offers many more options.

From 3 months with a Maxi-Cosi

With a special Maxi-Cosi adapter for your cargo bike you can safely take your baby with you in the cargo bike from about 3 months. The only condition is that your child's neck is strong enough to hold its head upright. Every child develops at its own pace, so take a good look at your own baby.

The Maxi-Cosi offers excellent back and head support. Your baby lies comfortably and safely while you cycle. A big advantage: the Maxi-Cosi absorbs vibrations and shocks well. If you ride over a bumpy sidewalk or cobblestones, your child will feel much less of it than in a normal seat.

Why not earlier than 3 months?

In very young babies, the head is still very vulnerable. The neck muscles are not yet strong enough to absorb shocks and sudden movements properly. Even in a Maxi-Cosi, vibrations from cycling can be too much for a newborn. Wait until your baby is at least 3 months and can lift the head independently.

"We advise parents to take it easy for the first few months," says Joeri of STOER Bikes. "Start with short rides on smooth asphalt. See how your baby reacts and build it up slowly. Your baby's safety always comes first."

What options do you have for baby transportation?

There are several ways to safely transport your baby in the cargo bike. The best choice depends on the age of your child and your personal preference.

The Maxi-Cosi in the bin

The most popular option for babies aged 3 to 9 months is a Maxi-Cosi with matching adapter. The CargoX cargo bike from STOER Bikes can accommodate a Maxi-Cosi adapter that you simply mount in the cargo box. Just click the Maxi-Cosi in and you are ready to go.

Benefits of the Maxi-Cosi:

  • Excellent protection for head and neck
  • Your baby is facing you, so you always have eye contact
  • Good damping of vibrations and shocks
  • Easy to click in and out
  • You have immediate transportation upon arrival

Note that a Maxi-Cosi takes up quite a bit of space. In the CargoX this is not a problem thanks to the spacious 100×70 cm bin, but on smaller cargo bikes it can become cramped.

A baby scale especially for the bakfiets

An alternative to the Maxi-Cosi is a special baby shell that you mount permanently in the cargo bike. These trays are designed for bicycle transportation and attach securely to the bench. Your baby also lies safely facing you here.

The downside? You have to lift your baby into the tray on the spot. With a Maxi-Cosi, you lift the whole seat with baby in it out of the car or house and click it into the cargo bike. This is easier when your baby is just sleeping soundly.

Toddler seat for transition (9 months to 2.5 years)

Once your child can sit independently, usually around 9 months, you switch to a toddler seat. You mount this seat on the bench in the cargo box. Your child sits upright and can look around while you cycle.

The toddler seat provides extra support for children who are not yet stable enough to remain loose on the bench. The three-point harnesses keep your child safely in place. Around 2.5 years of age, most children are stable enough to just sit on the bench with a belt.

On the bench with seat belt (from 2.5 years old)

Older children simply sit on the bench in the cargo box. The CargoX has sturdy three-point harnesses that meet European safety standards. The high sides of the cargo box offer extra protection. Up to about 7 years, children can ride comfortably in the cargo bike.

Safety first: what do you pay attention to?

A cargo bike is a safe way to transport your children. Research by the German ADAC showed that children in a cargo bike suffer fewer injuries in a collision than those in a bike seat or trailer. But safety starts with you as a parent.

Choose a cargo bike with good safety features

Not all cargo bikes are created equal. Pay attention to these points when purchasing:

  • Sturdy three-point harnesses for all children
  • High sidewalls that provide protection in the event of a fall
  • Good brakes that stop even when fully loaded
  • Stable frame with low center of gravity
  • Good lighting and reflectors

The CargoX by STOER Bikes The CargoX from STOER Bikes scores on all these points. The body is made of sturdy EPP material that absorbs shocks. Tektro hydraulic disc brakes provide reliable stopping power. Integrated LED lighting with turn signals makes you highly visible in traffic.

Take time to practice

A cargo bike steers differently than a regular bike. Before you hit the road with your baby, practice without children first. Ride a few laps, practice braking and taking turns. Do this in a quiet place with no traffic.

When you have mastered steering, take a test drive with some ballast in the bucket. For example, put a heavy bag where your baby will sit. That way you can feel how the cargo bike reacts with weight in it.

Before each trip, check

Make it a habit to do a quick check before every ride:

  • Are the tires properly inflated?
  • Are the brakes working properly?
  • Is the Maxi-Cosi or seat securely fastened?
  • Are the belts adjusted properly?
  • Are the lights working?

Tips for the first rides with your baby in the cargo bike

The first time with your baby in the cargo bike is exciting. With these tips, you can make it as enjoyable as possible for both of you.

Start with short rides

Your first outing doesn't have to be a marathon right away. Start with a 10-15 minute lap on quiet roads. See how your baby reacts. Some children love it right away; others need to get used to the movement and sounds.

Build up slowly. If your baby likes it, take a slightly longer ride next time. This way you will discover the world together at your own pace.

Choose your route carefully

For babies, smooth roads are much more comfortable than bumpy cobblestones or unpaved paths. Choose routes over asphalt whenever possible. Do you have to go over a bumpy stretch? Then drive more slowly and avoid potholes and speed bumps.

The CargoX's thick tires also help with this. The 20×4-inch fatbike tires absorb a lot of vibration and provide a smooth ride. Together with the front suspension, you notice much less of uneven road surfaces.

Provide the right protection

Your baby is sitting still in the cargo bike while you are nice and moving. That means your baby will get cold faster than you. Dress your baby warmly, even if the weather outside seems nice. A hat and warm socks are often necessary.

A rain canopy protects your baby from wind and rain. This keeps your baby nice and dry and out of draft, even when the weather turns.

Keep in touch with your baby

A great advantage of the cargo bike: your baby is in front of you and you can always keep an eye on them. Talk to your baby, sing songs, point out things you see. This way you will also notice immediately if your baby gets restless or is no longer happy.

Stop if your baby cries or seems uncomfortable. Check that everything is comfortable, that your baby is not too hot or too cold, and that a diaper might need changing. Sometimes a short break helps and then you can happily continue cycling.

"We have been riding a Stoer bicycle for a year now without any problems. Even the battery capacity has not deteriorated. And when you then see other brands where after a year the rust marks are visible I am glad I spent a little more and now have a bike made entirely of aluminum. And this one stays really neat!!!"
What are the main conclusions about the weight difference between drive systems?
"Purchased a STOER Bike last year after trying several fatbikes. STOER is by far the best! Still very much enjoy my purchase. In addition, the service is top notch!"
"The bike is perfect for people with long legs. Sitting comfort is perfect for long distances."

The best seasons to start

In the Netherlands we can cycle all year round, but some periods are more pleasant for the first rides with your baby.

Spring and summer: ideal for getting started

Spring is a perfect time to start. Temperatures are pleasant, it's not too cold and not too hot. Long light evenings make it easy to take a quick bike ride after work.

In summer pay attention to direct sun. The tub can get hot when the sun shines on it. Choose rides in the morning or early evening when it is cooler. A sunshade or hood will help keep your baby out of the bright sun.

Autumn and winter: with the right preparations

Even in the colder months you will be fine with your baby in the cargo bike. The rain canopy keeps wind and cold out. Dress your baby warmly in layers so you can adjust to the temperature.

Pay extra attention to slipperiness in winter. The CargoX's wide tires provide more grip than narrow tires, but remain cautious in black ice and snow. In that case, opt for safety and leave the cargo bike for a while.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

As a new cargo bike parent, you may fall into a few pitfalls. Here are the most common mistakes and how to avoid them.

Starting too early

We get it, you're eager to hit the road with your new cargo bike. But wait until your baby is really ready. If in doubt about your baby's neck strength, ask your doctor or the consulting firm for advice.

No good confirmation

A Maxi-Cosi that is not properly secured is dangerous. Check each ride to make sure the seat clicks firmly into the adapter. Do you hear a clear click? Then it's secure. In doubt? Check again.

Too long rides

A 3-month-old baby is not an experienced traveler. For the first few months, keep rides short, half an hour at most. Build it up slowly as your baby grows and becomes more accustomed to the cargo bike.

Forgot to put seat belts on

It seems so logical, but in the rush of a busy morning, it's easy to forget. Make it a regular routine: buckle up first, then drive off. Always. Without exception.
