The break-even point depends on your fares, the size of your family, and which subscriptions you can cancel. You can calculate it yourself in four steps. When we say \u201ctrip\u201d below, we always mean a single trip with the whole family. A round trip, therefore, counts as two trips.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Calculate your fixed monthly costs for the cargo bike.<\/strong> Add up the depreciation or lease payments, insurance, fixed maintenance costs that don\u2019t depend on how much you drive (such as a fixed-cost service), and any storage fees. Wear and tear that increases with mileage isn\u2019t included here; you\u2019ll factor that in during Step 3.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Calculate how much a single public transportation trip costs for the whole family.<\/strong> Add up the fare for everyone traveling with you who does not have a pass.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Calculate the variable cargo bike costs for that same one-way trip.<\/strong> Consider the cost of charging the battery and wear and tear, which depends on the number of kilometers, based on your cost per kilometer and the length of the trip. Do not include any costs that you already included as a fixed expense in Step 1. Subtract this amount from the result of Step 2.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Divide the result from step 1 by the result from step 3, and then by approximately 4.3.<\/strong> Then you'll know roughly how many single-family trips per week you need to break even. This step only works if the result of step 3 is greater than zero\u2014that is, if a public transit trip costs more than the variable cargo bike costs for the same trip.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A familiar example without actual amounts: (fixed monthly cargo bike costs) \u00f7 ((price of a single family trip by public transit) \u2212 (variable cargo bike costs per single trip)) \u00f7 4.3 = (break-even point in single trips per week). If the difference in parentheses is positive and you ride more often than the result indicates, then the cargo bike is more cost-effective according to this calculation. If you ride less often, public transportation is cheaper. If the difference is zero or negative, you cannot divide the numbers, and according to this comparison, there is no break-even point based on the number of trips: each additional trip does not make the cargo bike more cost-effective compared to public transportation. The more precisely you enter the amounts in each step, the closer the result will be to your actual break-even point.<\/p>\n<p>Do your family members currently have fixed-rate subscriptions? If so, compare the monthly cost of the subscriptions you can cancel with your monthly cargo bike expenses. The number of trips doesn\u2019t affect the subscription cost, since a subscription is a fixed rate. With the cargo bike, however, usage does matter: for a complete comparison, include both the fixed and variable cargo bike costs based on the number of trips and kilometers you expect to travel.<\/p>\n<h2>When does it make more sense to combine public transportation and a cargo bike?<\/h2>\n<p>Not every family has to choose one side. A mix might be a better fit if the trips are very different.<\/p>\n<p>Consider these situations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One parent commutes to work outside the city by train and therefore has a commuter pass. The cargo bike is used for school runs and grocery shopping.<\/li>\n<li>The stop is far from home. Compare the public transportation costs of those trips with your calculated cargo bike costs.
