Sometimes, yes. It only works if three conditions are met: Your dog still fits next to your child’s seat. The total weight in the cargo area remains under 100 kg. And the dog must be secured separately so it can’t reach your child. If any one of these three conditions isn’t met, it’s better to travel separately.

This article is about taking both a dog and a child on the same ride. If you’d like to know first whether a cargo bike is even suitable for your dog, read whether an electric cargo bike is suitable for dogs. If you mainly transport children, the instructions are in How to Safely Transport Two Children in a Cargo Bike.

How much space is left once your child is already in the car seat?

The CargoX cargo box measures 100 cm long and 70 cm wide. You won’t know how much of that floor space is actually available until you measure around the mounted seat on the bike itself. Your child’s seat takes up part of the cargo area, and your child also needs room for their feet. What’s left over is the space for your dog.

Exactly how much floor space the seating area takes up depends on the layout inside the bike. So don't rely on an estimate—measure it inside the bike itself. In What fits in a 100-cm container? You'll see how to assess that space in practical terms.

How to Measure Your Dog

Length when lying down: from the nose to the base of the tail, while your dog is lying down relaxed.

Width: across the shoulders, at the widest point.

Seat height: from the floor to the top of the head.

Compare those measurements to the free floor space remaining next to or in front of your child's seat. Does your dog only fit if he's curled up or lying halfway across the footwell? If so, he doesn't really fit.

A useful guideline comes from the LICG. For a dog carrier in the car, the institute states that the dog must be able to sit, lie down, and turn over, and that too much space makes it less safe in the event of a collision because the dog could then be thrown around inside the crate. That advice applies to cars, not cargo bikes. However, the general idea is worth applying: enough space for your dog to lie down and turn around, but not so much empty space that your dog can slide back and forth.

The weight: add it all up

The CargoX can carry up to 100 kg in the cargo area. That includes everything: your child, your dog, the school bag, and the groceries. Just weigh your dog and your child on the scale at home, and you’ll know where you stand.

Here are two fictional examples to illustrate the calculations:

Situation (fictional)

Child(ren)

Dog

Bags

All in the bin

One child, one medium-sized dog

16 kg

25 kg

6 kg

47 kg

Two children, a big dog

20 + 24 kg

38 kg

10 kg

92 kg

The second example stays just under 100 kg. However, that doesn’t mean you have the green light. Staying under the weight limit says nothing about whether there’s still room left, whether your dog will stay calm, or whether you’ll find the bike comfortable to ride. The weight is a strict limit—it’s not proof that it’ll work. To learn how to distribute your weight in the carrier wisely, read Distributing the load in the cargo bike.

How do you keep a dog separate and secure next to a child?

The general rule: your child and your dog each have their own space, and the dog cannot reach your child's space. This requires a few set rules.

Your child: seat belt and their own seat

The CargoX's dual-belt system secures two children in the carrier. Those belts are for your children. So don't use them to secure your dog.

Also pay attention to the seating area itself. According to the national government, you must Children under 8 years of age have a safe seat on a bicycle with adequate support for their back, hands, and feet. We verified this information with the national government on September 25, 2026. In practical terms, this means: your dog is not allowed to lie on your child’s feet or lean against the backrest. If that support area isn’t left free, the combination is too cramped.

Your dog: a harness, a short leash, and a designated spot

Attach it to a harness. The LICG recommends securing the dog in a bike basket so that it cannot jump out or fall out, and that Always attach it to a harness, never to his collar. That advice was written with baskets in mind, but the same principle applies to a crate: you don't want your dog to get caught by the neck when he tries to jump out.

First, have the mounting point secured. It’s not always a given that a suitable attachment point and the right fastener for your dog will be available for the carrier configuration you choose. Ask your dealer whether this is the case for your specific setup. Until this has been confirmed for that setup, do not transport your dog and child together in the carrier. In the accessory shop You can view the current selection, but that doesn't necessarily mean something is suitable for securing your dog in the CargoX. Don't assume that every short leash is safe at every attachment point.

Then check the length. Are the anchor point and fastener secured? If so, check to see if your dog can lie down and turn around without reaching the edge or your child's seat.

Check the traction. The CargoX has a non-slip base. You won't know if it provides enough traction for your dog's paws until you take it for a ride.

Weather and Temperature

The LICG points out that a dog in a basket is exposed to both sun and rain, so it can get too hot or too wet. In the car, this applies to both your child and your dog. A rain cover or car seat cover keeps passengers dry, but it can get stuffy under a cover with two warm bodies inside. You can find help with this decision in Choosing a rain cover or box cover.

At what size does it become difficult or unwise to mix breeds?

There is no set weight limit for dogs. A short, broad dog may fit more easily than a tall, slender dog of the same weight. Therefore, look for these signs:

Signal

What it means

Your dog is lying down and rolling around next to the seat, without touching your child's foot space

Combining them can work. Try it out first.

Your dog should be lying on top of or next to your child

Do not combine. Your child's seating area must remain clear.

The child, the dog, and the bags together weigh close to 100 kg

Leave your bags at home or ride separately. Don't put more than 100 kg in the trunk.

Two children in car seats, plus a dog

There will be less floor space left than with just one child. Be extra careful when measuring.

Your dog is restless, jumps, or reacts to other dogs

Start by practicing on your own, and only later practice with your child.

Are you unsure about the last point? If so, start by Teaching your dog to stay calm in the cargo bike, before your child joins you.

Why take a test drive with your dog and child?

Measuring and calculating tell you if it works on paper. You won't know how it feels when your dog turns around while you're making a turn until you actually try it.

The City of Portland offers parents some helpful advice: try Try out a transportation option first without your child, so you can get used to the extra weight and make sure everything is secure. A test ride is also a good time to practice getting on and off. If you're riding with a dog, you can build up to it gradually.

Here's how to set up the test

First, drive with the vehicle's own weight, without any passengers. A few heavy bags or other ballast, securely fastened in the cargo area, will give you a sense of what it’s like to steer and brake with a load. If you want to brake hard or practice a tight turn, do so only during this step: with the ballast secured and without a child or dog in the cargo area.

Then just your dog. The LICG recommends first practicing at home without a bike, then walking while holding the bike, and only then riding it. That order also works in the sandbox.

Then just your child. Make sure the seat belts are fastened properly and that your knees and heels aren't bumping into anything.

Finally, together, in a peaceful setting. For this ride, choose a safe spot with little traffic. Park the bike on the double kickstand, let your child get on and buckle up first, and then secure your dog. That way, you’ll have your hands free for one passenger at a time.

Drive slowly and brake gently. Drive slowly, brake gradually, and take wide turns. Pay attention to how your dog reacts and whether he stays in place. Sudden braking and sharp maneuvers have no place in a test drive with passengers.

If it still feels cramped or unsettling after taking those steps, then that’s an honest answer: for your dog and your child, traveling separately is the better choice. For more tips on how to make a test realistic, read Cargo bike test ride with a load.

Your next step

Bring your measurements and the weights of your child and your dog to a dealer. There, you can check out the seating configuration and ask whether a suitable anchor point and fastening device for a harness are available for that configuration. Would you like to bring your dog and your child along? If so, contact the dealer in advance. Ask if they’re allowed to come and if a test drive with both the dog and the child is possible. Find a dealer near you and schedule a test drive, so you can see if your dog and your child will both fit in the CargoX. Out and about together, but each in their own space.

Kan je hond mee in de bak terwijl je kind er ook in zit? Soms wel.
