The cargo area must be large enough for your dog to stand, sit, turn around, and, of course, lie down. The load capacity must be able to support both your dog and the rest of your cargo. Therefore, consider your dog\u2019s actual size and weight, not just its breed. Compare those figures with the cargo area size and the bike\u2019s maximum load capacity. Not sure? Test it out during a test ride with your dog along for the ride.<\/p>\n<h2>Measure first: here's what you need to know about your dog<\/h2>\n<p>A label like \u201csmall\u201d or \u201clarge\u201d doesn\u2019t tell you much. Two dogs of the same breed can vary considerably in height and weight. So grab a measuring tape and a scale.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Leg length:<\/strong> Measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail while your dog is lying fully stretched out. That length should fit comfortably in the crate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Seat height:<\/strong> Measure from the ground to the top of the head while your dog is sitting. This will determine whether he fits under a rain tent or crate cover.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Width when turning:<\/strong> See how much space your dog needs to turn around. It does, however, serve as a useful framework for the cargo box: if your dog can\u2019t do those four things, then the box is too cramped.<\/p>\n<h2>Baking pans compared: Which one is right for which size?<\/h2>\n<p>With your dog\u2019s measurements in hand, you can compare crates. Below are the published dimensions of the STOER CargoX alongside those of two models that their manufacturers market for dogs: the Nihola Dog and the Chike E-Dog. Please note: Dimensions alone do not indicate that a cargo box is suitable for your dog. Manufacturers do not always measure in the same way\u2014for example, they may use either interior or exterior dimensions. Load limits are also defined differently: \u2018in the carrier\u2019 and \u2018plus rider\u2019 are not the same metrics, so do not compare those numbers directly. That's the manufacturer's classification. Whether your dog will fit depends on its specific measurements.<\/p>\n<h3>Small dogs<\/h3>\n<p>Even with a small dog, check the lying length, seating height, turning space, and total load capacity. If it fits comfortably, then it actually has plenty of room to move around. Secure him with a harness and give him a designated spot to lie down, such as with his own blanket. This way, he\u2019ll stay in place when you brake or take a turn.<\/p>\n<p>A bike basket would work too, but according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.licg.nl\/honden\/fietsen-met-de-hond\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">LICG<\/a> These bike baskets are only suitable for small dogs. If you want to carry groceries or a school bag in addition to your dog, a cargo bike offers more space.<\/p>\n<h3>Medium-sized dogs<\/h3>\n<p>For a medium-sized dog, the length when lying down is the deciding factor. Does he fit comfortably stretched out, with a few centimeters of extra space on both sides? And can he turn around without bumping into the sides? The CargoX cargo area is 100 cm long and 70 cm wide. For example: a 35-kg dog plus 15 kg of groceries totals 50 kg. That stays within the 100-kg limit for what the CargoX can carry in the cargo area. If you also want to bring a child, recalculate the total. If you\u2019re getting close to the limit, opt for less cargo.<\/p>\n<h2>Get in and buckle up: this is how to keep your dog safe<\/h2>\n<p>A crate that's big enough isn't enough on its own. Your dog also needs to be able to get into it easily and stay put during the ride.<\/p>\n<h3>Boarding<\/h3>\n<p>The CargoX has a double kickstand, which provides extra stability during loading and unloading. Be sure to hold the bike steady and let your dog step in gently instead of jumping in. The non-slip floor gives paws more traction than a smooth surface. For older dogs or dogs that don\u2019t like to jump, lifting them in may be the safest option. Ask your dealer what options are available for your situation.<\/p>\n<h3>Secure to a harness<\/h3>\n<p>The LICG recommends that, when using bicycle baskets, you always secure your dog with a harness and never by his collar, so he doesn\u2019t get caught by his neck if he jumps out. That advice is intended for bicycle baskets, not specifically for cargo bikes. However, the same precaution may be wise when using a cargo bike. Use a short leash so that your dog can sit and lie down but cannot climb over the edge. The CargoX\u2019s seatbelt system is designed for children. Ask your dealer which attachment point is suitable for a dog leash.<\/p>\n<h3>Getting Used to It in Steps<\/h3>\n<p>First, let your dog get used to the bike at home, without riding it. A dog changes the handling of a cargo bike. He moves around, shifts his weight, and reacts to sounds.<\/p>\n<p>During the test drive, pay attention to the following points:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Fits:<\/strong> Can your dog stand, sit, turn around, and lie down?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Boarding:<\/strong> Is everything going smoothly, or do you have to keep helping him?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brakes:<\/strong> Does it stay in place when you brake hard?
